The Factory
Description: Three terrains posterized with a self made material make this one up. A lot of haze using Rashad's idea and a radial supporting the weak Bryce sun. Rendered premium with 36 rays per pixel took 3/4 days to finish.

You must have made an interesting brush to use in the terrain room to create this town or factory. The haze almost acts like the blur tool in PS. Very nice material in this scene it seems very complex or it was the way you used the terrains together.

The only thing that seems to stand out and is a little overdone for me is the one color which seems to distract from the complexity of the factory. In my mind I can see a blue tint on the top layer and then other colors as it progresses to the bottom. OK it is my wild imagination.

Haze blends with the clouds inperceptebly, as Render man observes, it looks more like postwork than part of the render. The factory is a little grim, but I suppose it was intended that way. The material in the foreground block is very effective, looks convincingly 3D and almost as if it were transparent in parts? Good effect!

The sky is one of David's, I think it is the first in the library of daylight skies. It is my favorite and I start every project with it (with a few minor modifications). I gave the clouds the same but less saturated colour as for the haze and this worked out nicely.

Right, there's a lot of transparency in the material used. There is only one material. The blue seeps up from underneath, there is no ground plane.

Everything turned out a bit different than I expected. Ambivalent as far as the size cue goes. I set out for a vast town but ended up with some sort of a building. Once I saw how it is going to look, I capitalised on the grimmness. The impression of the whole changes again when looked at it from some distance.

I am not exactly certain what I should make of this. What I get is a cityscape, not just one building as the haze does a great job of presenting the scene as a large scale city. The transparency of the building or buildings seems odd to me, I am not really sure what effect you were after. Also the lack of a ground plane means alot of light comes up from underneath, a bit unnatural as sunlight is usually hard to beat, manmade lights rarely if ever outshine the sun. I would assume that the light coming up from below was from the living city. The city was surely made with terrains as I can see the tapered tops are narrower than the bottoms, the structures are not true cubes. This render took many days to complete and with the transparency I can see why. I hope it does not sound like I am being critical, I do not mean to be, I guess I am just uncertain as to the direction you were aiming with this piece. One thing is certain though, you have capitalized on the grimmness to the max. I can see an image like this in a movie like a Batman / Gotham City type of scenario.
