Eagle's Landing 2
Eagle's Landing 2

Eagle's Landing 2
Description: I took the suggestions that were given in Eagles Landing. I made some adjustments with the ocean so it appeared level with the rest of the scene. Changed the terrain for the ocean to make it appear like rolling waves coming in. And the spot light worked great with the settings in falloff range. I also went back and read all the manual again on the different lights so I can see how they work in different situations.

I am happy with how the wet sand turned out on the beach. You can see a few small patches of sand without the water. Used PS Clone and Smear took as the different water terrains and planes have hard edges.

Put in some real Utah clouds.

Tried the eagle idea of blending two pictures together in PhotoShop.

The next thing I might help the lighting would be to rig a radial to the sun as shown in David's tutorials on his web page.

Still solicit other ideas or suggestions.
Thanks again for your help.

The lack of strong sunlight makes the scene feel of an overcast day. I agree that you have done an exceptional job at the wet sand. The image overall is very accomplished. You traded the Bryce sky for a photo, hey why not at this point, it is one of the skills you have already developed from earlier renders and it functions splendidly here. Renderman, this image is a sure 5/5. Very nice work!

Agreed - sky fits nicely and the wet sand is spot on. The incomming waves look much more plausible, very nice. There's just that small part in the middle ground at right that looks a bit funny.

I do not exactly understand why the larger eagle is semi-transparent. Is it "dreamy"? The sky, though excellently fitting has a washed-out look. I think the photograph could do with a bit of additional light to give it better contrast. A spot hidden below the rocks and sea pointing up at the photograph is something I encourage you to experiment with.

And yes, the light and the absence of shadows makes this piece of art looking real. Good work overall, RenderMan. Keep it up.

Thanks for the encouragement and your comments. I like to experiment the sand and the water mats are both infinite planes sharing the same positions except that I increased the z coordinates just a tad on the size of the sand plane.

Something strange happened with the Smear tool in PS I am not sure what I did wrong but when I was using this tool everything looked great and then when I saved it and then opened it again the front water mat was the strange color you see on the front of the receding water. I must have had the smear tool set to a color and did not notice it. But thanks to the clone tool I fixed the original picture.

I agree Horo my dreamy eagle was not all that great but I just wanted to try it. I think blending photos in the future will have some advantages. I did this same scene with the eagle covering the whole picture with give a little better effect for a dream land. Ha

Horo I need a little more detail on what you are suggesting with the spot lights? There are several rocks and allot of ocean in this scene. What are you seeing as far as a location I will be glad to give it a try.

RenderMan - there must be a bit of a free space between the last of rocks and the sky picture. That gap would be the place to locate a wide spot, far down looking up at the picture. Use no falloff to ensure the photograph gets lit uniformly, and low intensity. Examples done in such a way are http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=2675 , http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=2493 and http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=2478 and in the last example, a radial was used to show where the sun is. Not great artistic examples, but they show what I mean.
