Eagles Landing
Eagles Landing

Eagles Landing
Description: I was inspired by the photo in my beach scene. I have two layers of water in order to create water washing in at the beach with the tide going out. I used PS to blend the water in with the sandy beach. I am working on a new scene with three layers of water trying to create water on the sand.

I need help trying to figure out how to lighten up the eagle without lighting up the water or rocks. I have even tried Rashad's flattened spotlight but it still lit up the rocks in the background. I have put up to six small radials on the bottom side of the eagle but in order to increase the brightness to see the wings the ocean water begins to lighten up.

And if you have any other suggestions for this scene I would be willing to listen.

What I want to do is make another scene with the full view of the eagle and use PS to blend the two pictures together.

I want to thank everyone on this site as this seems like quite an improvement from the first picture I posted. But still have allot to learn.

A few thngs. First ,the sky is very good, but you need to increase the cloud height to the maximum. There are very few "recipes" I would recommend for all situations but maximum cloud height is a paramount trick to escape the expected limitations of Bryce skies. Low cloud heights just do not look good, they look flat. Bryce clouds are very flat and the only sure remedy is to use maximum cloud height at all times, it makes the clouds look more 3d due to viewing angle. When you increase cloud height you will notice that the haze gets thicker and the clouds may repeat too often so you may need to slow down cloud frequency. As far as haze, the most real option is to have alot of haze in the background but none in the foreground. Start with a density setting of 100, this will give you a nice gradient in the background, Couple that with a thickness setting of only about 0.8. Sounds low I know, but this is what you want to give you a haze free foreground that increases naturally with distance toward the background. You can always increase the thickness setting to increase the feel of the haze in the foreground. Haze is a very important consideration and the preset libraries do not help make the job of understanding haze any easier.

I do not know what you are doing with the water but it looks great, especially in the foreground. I feel that in the background there may be some issues with the water as it does not look properly flat, maybe it is my eyes playing a trick on me.

Light on the bird is a simple matter of ranging the lights. Bryce has incredible light control. If you want a light to affect close objects only then you must control the range or fall-off. Instead of assuming linear fall-off, try squared or even ranged fall-off. Linear lights extend to eternity though very weakly. Controling the fall-off range of the lights prevents the light from affecting all objects at all distances and this will speed up the render also because there are fewer lights to calculate in certain instances where distances prevent a light from factoring in the render of a distant object. Also, not every spotlight has to be flat. I use flat lights to shortcut indirect light from a flat wall. In the case above you could use a normally shaped spotlight so that objects you do not want lit will not be lit.

The terrians seem very well modeled and textured. Nice. Overall this scene is very promising. Keep it up.

I see the water washing in. It is a bit high but since I haven't visited that place yet, I can't say whether its real or not ;-). The concept is great and the rocks do look good. Low cloud high is not always evil (though it is here because it makes the skydome appear like a flat sheet - a typical Bryce sky). If you go for a bad weather front, low cloud ceiling gives quite good results if they are dark. Examples: http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=1734 and http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=1056 generally, for good weather clouds move them all the way up, for bad weather scenes, bring them down.

Rashad is right about the spotlights, the only thing I add is that the number entered in the Ranged field are BUs. If the eagle is 50 Bryce Units away from the spotlight, set Ranged to about 55 or so.
