Bouncing Ideas
Description: I thought I would play around with a totally different approach. In the top scene you have just a radial inside the oil lamp set at 35 with nothing special. You can still see the affect this has in the room without any special lighting.

In the lower picture I added transparency at the setting of 5 to the walls and then placed radials on the outside of the walls a short distance away. The room has more light which does give the appearance of the light bouncing but the problem that I find interesting is the shift in the shadows. The shadow shift is not because of the added lights but because of the small amount of transparency I added to the walls. I did a third test without the lights on the back of the walls and still had the same results with the shadow shift. I should also mention that you can see the ceiling in the mirror ball which is a grid with and off white it has a small amount of transparency which made it more visible in the sphere. This ceiling is the same in both scenes.

In this set up you can use vary the distance of the lights from the walls to weaken of strengthen the light affect. The only problem is the transparency issue changing the shawdows.

I was going to just add ambiance to the walls but this would affect the whole surface as the lights can be controlled.

If the floor is not reflective then I would check to see you disabled the sunlight. The shadows have got to be comming from some lightsource. The worst thing about using transparency is the increase in render time, but nevertheless it is an interesting idea.

Thanks for the tip turning of the sunlight changes things quiet a bit but it also can be used in the affect if it was positioned correctly. If we are trying to simulate bouncing light why not use anything we can if it gives a natural look.

While the scene if very simple it only took five minuets to render with five lights and the sun.

It is amazing to me how much light can come through such a little amount of transparency. The shadow on the sphere is very strong.

This is an interesting test, RenderMan. I have also a new idea about this bouncing light thingy and wanted to bring it in today. However, an author asked me for some examples for his forhcomming book about HDRI panoramas and since it is due in a fortnight, I had to set priorities. Your example is an interesting addition to what we have seen up to now. What I don't like is how the shadows from the oil lamp got faint and the additional deep shadows from a light source not accounted for.

Nice experiment. The soft shadows look good. I think you are making good lighting choices. It is important to remember to disable the sun and usually the haze for indoor scenes. I find the overall impression to be sucessful.

Thanks again for you comments and input. Yes Rashad I forget about that disabling the sunlight but certainly would not discount it for further testing.

I am having some difficulty as I have created a box using the 2d planes and I have used a radial for a light in the center on the ceiling and for some reason I cannot create shadows on the objects in the room. Any ideas?

Make sure shadows are engaged in the sky lab. ALso make sure each light source casts shadows. Lastly, make sure within the mat lab that the materials of the objects cast shadows as you can disable shadows for individual objects in that way.
