Light Baked in 3 minutes 58 sec
Description: OK appologies to those who are finding these experiments rather esoteric and are frankly bemused and wonder what all the fuss is about. Well, it took me a year of using bryce before I recognised I needed to turn off ambient. And another two years before I saw the need to use multiple light sources. So essentially, it all takes time, but evenutally you will begin to see the light. So here some ambient has been employed and the whole scene is lit with baked lights. One behind the camera and five using the same filter over the sink area. Render time for final render 3 minutes 58 seconds. Which is fast. However, the two filters took 10 minutes each to produce. In this example I don't feel the IBL (previous render)added enough to warrent the extra time needed.

I am not worn out yet. I am still watching with great anticipation. What are your thoughts on the comparison of the two scenes? The first one seems to be richer and has more color. The ambient may have washed out some color but that is the trade off. What do you mean when you say you are using filters? This sounds a little labor intensive unless you can save the filters as rigs?

Shadows are softer, here. I still think the shadows on the left are a bit on the deep side.

The filters (light gels) are prerendered from the exact position of the lights using bryces panoramic option. Firstly at 1000x1000 pixels and then at 100x1000 pixels. This takes about 10 mintues. These renders are combined in PSP8 to create a tall thin image which I use as the gel. I suppose ideally I should use Horo's well researched technique to generate a proper spherical render but that would take six renders and be even more time consuming. The point about the filters is they are rendered to depth 1 with no shadows and all the materials set to 100 reflection 100 metalicy 254 speculative halo and premium render 36rpp soft reflection ticked. This creates the map for the incidental reflection of colour that is then projected back onto the geometries in the final render. OK, that sounds a bit complicated, but essentailly as Horo pointed out, it's rather like inside out IBL. Once the filters have been made - not a long job really - then any number of renders can be made very swiftly so long as none of the geometries are moved. Camera can move. Materas can be adjusted and light intensites. So it does offer quite a degree of flexiblity for fine tuneing. The extra colour in the first scene comes from the bbb.hdr. It's atmostpheric, but perhaps not realistic. The ambient exists only for the toothmug, the grout, the bristles of the brush and a tiny bit in the back of the sink.

This sounds interesting and a territory I have not yet explored. I have never used the panoramic option. I know were it is located and will have to experiment with it. The PSP8 must mean Photo Shop version 8 correct? I still trying to get used to these new abbreviations.

Thanks for the explanation and why the color difference between the two test renders.

From my perspective I am hoping that a simpler solution can still be found. Rashad seems to have a good direction with his flat spot lights. But I still wonder if the same affect can be produced with radials with a 2D disk filter to soften the light on the subject. What do you think as I an not a versed in the Bryce as yourself.

Renderman, radials will cast light in all directions, even their assigned wall. This means you will get little bright spots on the surface of your walls with radials. The flat spotlights are only my preferred tool because they have the ability to cast light to a maximum of only 180 degrees.

David, I think the scene looks good and I do not feel the ambient glow flattening the scene so you have used it sparingly, which is fair. The scene has a slightly overexposed feel to it, but I have felt the same way about some of my scenes lately and it is not a bad thing. It is hard to judge the indirect light because so much of the scene is in the direct light and very little of it lands solely in those shadows. But as is it feels natural and 3d and convincing. I really like the way the rest of the room appears. Oh, perhaps a less perfect metal for the cold water handle would be interesting and might add a touch more weight to the scene. The grime of the grout is incredible.

Thanks Rashad I understand what you are saying. I just wished there was an easier way to go about this.

Of course we could use and learn Carrara but where would be the fun in that? I can't say for certain, but I do not think there is going to be any easy and simple solution to this puzzle. If my method proves viable, it will be fiddly at best. Rashads, likewise, may be more managable and accurate, but I fear it will result in feasome render times for those of us with slower computers.

Right now I am going to try to convince Daz that they could use sampled light sources similar to those used in IBL to create virtual maps of indirect light for much faster render. The indirect is the main thing missing from Bryce in the way of GI. The ibl solves the skylight issue reasonably well, though with alot of banding and Carrar sky light has no banding. I do not want to learn Carrara, I only want to steal its powers for use in Bryce. But as you observe, lack of GI in Bryce means that for a realistic result expensive workarounds are necessary. This makes an already slow render even slower. Carrara seems more and more like the way to go, sad to say. I will not give up on Bryce yet but they need to make sense of this thing and get some development into Bryce again.

Ah - that's the spirit David. Why go to all that trouble to learn Carrara when we can have so much more trouble to bend Bryce doing what it was not designed to do. Where's the fun if you get it all for free?

Yes yes exactly! I don't play half life2 on easy. Or medium. You never really propperly appreciate the things that are free, only the ones you have to work hard to get. And this way, we dig deeper into the bowels of bryce - which is perhaps more desireable than it sounds when I put it that way.

-That was pretty funny. The bowels it is. True, we are gaining a deeper understanding, but only after years of spinning our wheels because of being tricked by Bryce shortcuts. Better late than never I suppose.
