Your Move
Description: I wanted to add a little more to this chess game so I have added the Gremlin along with a table and chair. This is using the outdoor HDRI on a very low setting with 7 radials in a ring around the table.

To be very honest with you I don't have a clue about how to play chess but did find this set up on the internet so will let those of you who know figure out the next moves as the Gremlin is waiting with bated breath.

I mostly use the Linear on the Falloff in the IBL lab and was wondering how you decide what works best in different scenes?

It was also hard to decide what category to place this picture under. Well the Gremlin could be a monster in a different circumstance bout also could be Life Stills but that just did not seem to fit.

I think the scene is fine but your ring is too wide. I do not get the feeling that there is a single direct light source but I shoud be able to tell where the light bulbs are placed. There should be shadows falling away from the bright direct light source. The light feels very even from all sides, I see no shadows. You need shadow for a 3d impression or the scene will become too flat.

I still think you would be better to start from scratch and only introduce lights when it is absolutely necessary and do not be afaid of shadows. Your ibl light is far too bright. Your ring seems too wide combined result is no shadows and therefore a bit of flatness.

You are working hard and testing many things so it is just a matter of time before it all solidfies.

Yes I have been taking time to try to improve my skills and very soon I will start again on my Sanctuary project. In Carrara I recreated the whole Old Testament Sanctuary but now what to make some improvements.

You are right this light ring does eliminate shadows I should try some lights from different perspectives in order to create more reality to the scene. I am slowly starting to understand this a little better.

It's the lack of shadows that makes this image looking flat.
