Nutbots
Description: The building is part of Sector 15 from DAZ, as are the toonbots Chomper. The Klein-Bottle in the hands of the nearest Chomper was modelled by David and is available here. It was a bit tricky to get it into D|S: I had to import the .3ds file into Wings3D and export it as .obj. This could be imported into D|S to help in posing the toonbot. Everything came back into Bryce nicely. There are 14 radials, 3 each to make the lamps near the ceiling visible and one each to cast light. One is in the water tank and Tarzan got also one with square falloff.

The main light comes from the lek-3ant HDRI I made from only 28 pictures a fortnight ago. It is tilted up (X=359, Y=30) and shows the elevation cogwheel and part of the construction of a 32 m / 105 ft parabolic antenna dish. I couldn't load the 6400 pixel diameter probe and had to resort to the 3840 px one. The file could be saved with 2.2 GB but cannot be loaded anymore. I anticipated such and worked with the 1280 probe until I was ready for the final render. The light is a bit blue because there is no direct sun and a lot of blue sky (dynamic 355'000 : 1)

Wow, that is a freakin' incredible hdri. Wow Wow Wow! I really like the model poses once again, very fun and full of character. No quibbles except that some of the brighter patches are very bright. Seems right to me though.

How did you get the ibl light inside of the room? Am I to understand that this room is open on one side like a staged setting?

Thanks Rashad. Yes, bright is a bit bright. In fact, I considered to render another 2 or 3 versions with less light, create a medium contrast HDRI and tone-map it. But I think it is not good enough to go to all that trouble. That talk about nuts inspired me to this.

Light: yes, this part of Sector 15 is open at the back (the office part is closed, see Gossiping). Not much light is comming that way, though. I had closed it using a cube but there's no difference whether it's there or not. The real sun is in front of the dish and so, there is no light comming in from the back side. The dish - though in shadow - provides most of the white light. The blue is from the sky that takes about a fourth of the hdri's "real estate". So most of the light from the HDRI gets in through the windows, as is also evident from the shadows.

Otherwise, set the walls of a closed room to 'no shadow casting' to make them transparent to light. HDRI light emanating from the outside into a room is a bit problematic because of the shadows that are cast from the objects on the wall. The HDRI has to be carefully chosen. See my email answer to your email about the bouncing light. Lighting a Bryce scene will keep us busy experimenting for yet some time, I reckon.

Horo your color combinations look great. I am a big fan of blue. From my standpoint I think the lighting looks wonderful. The combination of the toonbots really add to the scene and give it some life.

Very nice work.

I have Sector 15 but have never used it. I also have "The Study" with all the furniture but am not ready to tackle the lighting at this time.

Horo you pictures are always amazing. I really like the lighting and colors. My favorite is the one swinging from the cables.
Is there a really easy way to make HDRI because when I try to import a picture I get an error message.
Very nice picture.

Fun scene, top marks for posing the robots and overall composition. The hdr background also looks excellent, and very much in keeping with the rest of the scene. Dispite the high resolution it still looks slightly out of focus, I'd have been tempted to do something to hide this maybe putting in some bump pattern on the glass windows, maybe horizontal louvres (refractive) that distrupt the image slightly and draw attention away from the change from render geometry to hdr background. A minor point. The lighting, bright, yes, has had me scratching my head. It is good, but I don't feel it is right. I'd like to say with conviction what I think is wrong. Somehow, the interior and the models lack "weight" I'd have expected a higher contrast maybe because we are looking towards outdoor windows and indoor lights rarely compete with the daylight world. I know I can't account for other windows out of my field of vision, but it seems to me that too much light is getting around the objects when I would have expected (on the evidence of what I can see in the scene) that it would be lit mostly by a strong light souce from the windows and whatever light then gets bounced from that as a secondary source. That's my quibble - if the focus were how real it appears?

I'm begging to think Horo lives in the dark. Which is ok, cause this piece looks great. It's definitely the robot poses...
