Description: I used the radials light ring of 14 lights and lowered the diffusion on the curtain and the platform. Soft shadows on the lights is 100 and the soft shadows in the render was turned off this time. I placed one radial light next to the black chess pieces as they did not seem to light as well as the white pieces.

Looking good. I still think the business of the ground plane material is drawing attention away from the chess pieces. The lines are very distracting. The marble should be the only pattern, the other patterns are clashing with the marble veins in my opinion.

FYI, when premium AA is used all shadows are hard unless you click soft shadows. This includes lights that you assign soft shadows in the light lab. Once you kick in the premium controls it will only soften shadows if you click on the option of soft shadows. This is why none of your soft shadow settings actually were applied. I see no soft shadows above. Engage soft shadows and you will see the effect applied. Render time will increase.

The curtain is better at this lower diffusion but the color saturation is still very high. You need to access the numeric hue entry tool. Hold down the cntrl+alt keys simultaneously as you click on the diffusion color. This will bring up a digital color pallete and you can have much more precise control over the colors. Lower the saturation to no more than 140 and you will find the result I am encouraging you to discover.

Your bounce light scene is ready and I will be sending it to you today. I could not send the Apartment scene as it is illegal to distribute the Daz models I used in the scene. No problem I constructed a new scenario and I will send it to you and also to David and Horo so that we are on the same page regarding the bounce light technique.

Also, you do not want to have 14 soft shadow lights in a single scene, it will be a very slow render. The purpose of light rings is to accomplish soft shadws the hard way, that is multiple stacking of hard shadows lights that combine to create an impression of softness as the lights in different positions cast shadows that slightly disagree. If you are going to use soft shadows settings in the light lab my feeling is that a single radial is likely all you need. Rings fake soft shadows via hard shadows.

Ok so the soft shadows in the Light Lab are of no value unless the soft shadows is turned on in the Premium Effects correct?

Thanks for taking the time to make a scene with bounce lighting as I know it takes time. Everyone one on this site has been very helpful.

From you last comment how come my radial lights did not make soft shadows naturally? Do I need more than one light ring? Are you suggesting making the scene with one radial light set on soft shadows without the light ring? I just want to make sure I am following you.

I just sent the scene to you so you should receive it any moment now.

You understood me correctly regarding the soft shadow settings in premium AA.

Indeed, the more lights you use in your ring the softer the shadows as there will be more bands. The more shadow bands the better. But this is where I feel that the ring shape can be problematic and you might be better off arranging the lights in the shape of a small dome, this will give a more even dispersal of the shadows.

Ok, we do have some improvements here and I have nothing to add to Rashad's comments. On thing about light rings: yes, you can use several. They can be tilted, put vertical or whatever. No need to have them only horizontal. If you go for a light dome, try also to use a flat white HDRI. This is easier to use and rendrs faster. This is only true, if you go for a light dome with white light, though.
