Chess
Description: I created a lighting rig for a car but do to the lack of hi definition I deleted the car and added this chess scene. There are two flattened spot lights. One in the front is about 25 intensity and the one in the back side 40. Soft shadows one both spot lights is set to 100 and have soft shadows selected in the render options. There are two radials in the fov for added light to the curtain. Three radials on the front bottom of the cylinder platform set on about 2 intensity.

I made some new curtains in Hexagon which surround the scene.

Very even lighting on the chess board. Shadows are soft and rather subdued. I think we have a bit of a clash of colours with the blue curtain. Have you ever tried to use Coloured Light Rings? You find a tutorial at David's or my website. I mention this because you are obviously experimenting with lighting and those rings could be an option to investigate.

I think there is definet progress with the lighting here. Models look very good. As Horo mentions the color saturation of the blue curtain is very very high now and needs to be mixed with grey to look more like a real object. Also, similarly to the Sedan scenes, the ground plane and the curtain need to be less distracting, as too much patterning of the environment will draw focus away from the models you want to emphasize. In this case the curtain is not patterented but the ground plane very much is and I think the compositional sense of the image would benefit from less patterning.

The textures are very very good. I find the marble to be rather convincing. Dare I say it, but the marble might benefit from a little reflection. Just a little like maybe factor 5 only, barely noticeable. The lighting wraps itself around the models very well and when I look at just the chess pieces I get the feeling the scene could have been lit ibl or light dome, which is just the feeling I should be getting, good job!

The curtain model turned out very well.

Horo's idea of colored light rings is very interesting. Often indoor lights have a warm tan tint to them. It would be a mistake to oversaturate the lights but a hint of color would be great.

In the description you describe your secondary or bounce lights, but where are or is your direct lighting? Bounce lights are results of your primary lights so the first thing to start with are your strong sources and then introduce the weaker lights to adjust shadows from there, instead of the other way around. This will avoid overly even light.

This is surely progress over the most recent Sedan Scenario. You are moving in the right direction. Surely you can feel the difference. Nice!

Radial light rings ha I did David's tutorial some time back and have produced dozens if not more. But I am am experimenting with the flattened spot lights with a few radials. But you are right some light rings would work well with this chess board. I have made flattened spot light rings pointing out and in. And don't forget the parallel light ring I made when I was trying to reflect light in my Sedan scene.

Horo, you don't like my blue curtain? Ha What color would you like? I will try this scene one more time with light rings so I can get the experience. But what size light rings should be used to get the best result?

The curtain was very simple I just used a cylinder in Hexagon and added many verticals and then selected every other vertical and then used the scale tool to push out the selected verticals and then smoothed. Well I had to tessellate the bottom and top or make hard edges so they would not deform.

Rashad, You are right some reflection would have added a nice affect to this chess board.

As far as bounce lights you will need to send me a rig for this as I still don't totally understand it. You have mentioned this before and it would help if I could see how it works. I have added my email so if and when you get the time I would like to see an example so I can get a better understanding of bounce lights. The direct lighting was the flattened spot lights on each side of the chess board. They were pointing directly at the chess board. I had to get the angle just right to get this result.

Then there is negative lighting. I just found a tutorial on this last week but need to find time to explore it.

The Sedan scenario was almost embarrassing. I had enough lights in that scene to light New York City.

Another question if you notice the front edge of the round platform there is a half circle light spot. I thought this was my lighting but I am just now trying a radial light ring and have the same problem with this light spot. The only thing I can think is that it is the camera as I have it very close to the scene so the curtain is not casting a full blue in this area. Any ideas?

Most likely it is the top of your curtain mesh. If you make the curtain taller it should solve the problem from this camera angle. I also would suggest that you place a blue ceiling to match the curtains so that your room has a roof.

A Bryce cylinder is closed, obviously, a Hexagon one not. Rashad is right, it is the top end of the cylinder that is mirrored. I've thought that the moment I looked at the picture and then doubted that you booleaned open the cylinder. The colour of the curtain is not amiss, it is the colour saturation. Just bring it down a bit and all's well.

Yes I left the lid off on purpose thinking it would not make any difference because the sunlight was turned off. Looks like I misunderstood you comments on the curtains but I did try some different colors and found out how much color impacts the scene. The light rings are a little tricky in this situation but will keep playing with them. There are many variables as to the size of the light rings and how many lights to add to a ring to get the right affect.
