Description: The Sedans are from DAZ3D and the rusty material on the stand for the mirror ball from David. All the light comes from the backdrop, an HDRI with 6400 pixel diameter I assembled from 49 photographs I took in the dry bed of the river Rhone on the Sunday before yesterday. Premium render with soft shadows and 36 rays. The HDRI quality is at 256, Intensity at 80 and HDRI-Effect at 75 with Linear 50. Took 40 hours to render and the sourse file could not be saved with such a large HDRI (I had to use a small light probe for that).

The quality of light and colour balance of the backdrop is realistic. That much is immediately obvious from just looking at the thumbnail. Backdrop resolution is good, particularly for this FOV but not quite sharp enough in contrast with the vehicals and as a result is having a bit of a minatureising effect on the cars (at least that is how I interperet it). The ground material also is not quite sharp enough, but compensates for that by being very interesting. Reflections on the car bodywork look good, sky colour looks natural in them. And the light falling on the background looks like the light falling in the scene (which doesn't always happen in lightprobes as we know). That being said, I have no doubt the lightprobe is worth full marks alone. The scene is good and the failings I have listed are minor and mostly limiations of the software rather than the artist. I might quibble slightly over the choice of looking down on the cars, since that is not a very flattering angle to look at them, but to be fair, they are not exactly the fashion models of the car world. Good work. 5/5

Horo, This looks great and you have answered some of my questions by demonstration thanks. I thought mine looked great until I saw this rendition. I take it you did not use a fisheye lens as 49 pictures seems like allot. I think you should enter this picture in the Bryce Gallery. Wow

I was thinking the same thing that David mentioned is the blur of the backdrop because of Bryce or could it have been sharper. In real life things don't blur that suddenly unless I don't have my glasses on.

Um, lets see here...Incredibly incredible. The background looks very good for a Bryce hdri backdrop likely impossible to match. A labor of dedication since the file could not be saved. WOwowowow

Thanks for doing such things because otherwise I do not think we would ever see this kind of work in Bryce.

I was going to ask if the light probe was the only light source in the scene. I agree with David that the light is incredible. I feel the heat of the sunlight. Incredible HDRI construction!

The colors and the light coming off the screen into my face are very lifelike. I really feel like I am standing there. The cars are reflecting the background and sky very nicely. Hard to see an avenue of improvement. 5/5

Thanks you for your kind comments!

RenderMan - your sedan looks great, mine is just in another environment. In fact, your entry reminded me that I rendered a promo picture a while ago and inspired me to try again.

Blurriness of backdrop: yes, the camera angle with 48 degrees is too wide for such a "small" HDRI. The max. angle would be 44 degrees if my formula is right. I've got to verify that.

I hoped I could fake DOF with the blurred foreground, but you were not deceived. The viewing angle was selected to show some reflection on the roof of the car and to cut out the white sky, which should be blue.

Yes, all light comes from the probe which also serves as backdrop. Balancing the light of the background with the light on the objects was the difficult thing here. In fact, I've planned the right lower edge of the floor to be burned out like some of the boulders in the HDRI. I didn't notice it became a bit darker before the long render was well advanced.

Nevertheless, from a lighting point of view, I think Bryce IBL is quite good. Managing it is the difficult part. We're not yet on the top of the learning curve.

Oh - and the nicest thing for me are the upside down reflections on the glass of the headlights.

Hmm, Horo, now that you mention it, there Are upside down reflections (which I perceive more as refractions for just the same reason) on headlights' glass. Maybe (if you had control over the texturing there) you should've applied something less refractive with more or less cross-hatched pattern. You pointed my attention there so that's why I'm discussing the matter. Apart from that this looks like a very satisfying composition regarding technical approach for lighting, backdrop and reflections on car. It is obvious to me that the model is quite acurate, but it still lacks some smoothing, the reflections give that away on the upper side of the doors and at the rear of the right back fender, not your fault nontheless. If you were to present this entry in resolution of 800x500 I'd consider the render 100% photorealistic. The backdrop would also look sharper due to the smaller res. This 1280x res requires more detail in foreground to be judged photo-realistic or at least David's Distressed Concrete material from the exchange, rescaled properly. This stretching right in front (as good as the texture might be) really takes away this 1 point of my vote. Shadows, hdr probe and lighting alone though, I agree deserve full 5er. I know you have a large widescreen (correct me if mistaken) around 1680x1050 so you already saw this img smaller, but if you test it on 1280x LCD or 1024x CRT monitor you will understand my point (the image resize).
