Car Show
Description: This is the Daz Chevy Sedan. I wanted to do some testing with lighting. The Sedan is inside a cylinder. I have added 12 radial lights as different locations around the car. Three sets of four radials at different heights. There are three spot lights on the sides by the camera pointing at the car. The top picture was full quality high priority and optimize render with one more spot light added on top of the car facing down. The bottom picture is the same without the extra spotlight but was rendered using super fine with everything else set on normal. Can you see much difference?

And just a note for those that might be interested I took all the ambient out of the materials for the car. Discovered that I could also turn down the diffusion in order to get rid of hot spots on the cylinder and floor.

Wow! My goodness Renderman! This is a sure 5/5! I had begun to wonder if all of the advice you were receiving from the advanced users might have been overwhelming to you as a newbie to Bryce. Turns out you are right in step. What I really like about your description is that it sounds like you have mastered the notion of lights. You killed all of the ambient glow! Perfect first step. 12 lights carefully arranged, spotlights too, cylindrical enclosure, advanced stuff here. The lights do nothing if the material choices are not right, your materials are spot on. I really like the car paint and the shiny floor. the cylinder in the background almost made me think of a curtain at first. You have come leaps and bounds and in record time. You are skillful magician. You demonstrate unimaginable potential. WOWOWOW!

I do not have any technical notes. Every choice you made seems to be right on. I think I prefer the top render though I cannot be sure why. Very good work here! I am impressed! I think you should submit this the the Daz 3d Bryce Galleries. I think you could stand a good chance of making the cut especially since they really like when users utilize Daz content (models. textures) well as you have done here! It helps them to sell more content.

Yes, very nice setup. Interesting "curtain". I like the colours used. Difficult to say which one is better. I like the upper a slight bit more, but cannot point out why.

My fav is the upper one too. It seems that the upper render uses higher rays/pixel quality, because the "grid" between the headlights is more acurate in terms of render sharpness. The lower image lacks rendered pixels of detail definition in this particular place, making it look with artefacts. Also, this same grid along with the bumper in the upper img look more metalic then the lower, because those two appear slightly darker diffused (thus letting the specularity to show more) and this "darkening" seems to take away some of the reflectivity which is a good thing for some metallic surfaces. You can lower the diffusion of the bumper even more I think, and raise the specularity. The reflectivity needs to be reasonably low. This upper render is to show off the brand new car paint supporting the beautiful curves, but remember that shiny surfaces isn't always necessarily high reflective, specularity is the "hidden" factor. To prove this - look at the top part of the headlights, the upper rend shows traces of spec., that are not present in the lower rend. The case with the car paint is almost the same, though here I only see a little bit of difference in the spec. intensities. I can suggest you to try through spec. to "reflect" as many lightsources from the surroundings as possible. This way not only the paint, but also the curves of the brilliant Chevy Sedan will pop up nicely and the front and back left mud-guards/fenders will be clearly seen. If you're not concerned about the render-times, you could go for an Uffizi HDR backdrop reflection over the car paint.
You Are improving, that is obvious! Keep on going.

On the top image I see a difference on the headlights, the lenses are more evenly illuminated and there are added gleam spots on the housings. There's also an added gleam spot on the front bumper and the colors of the floor are a tad brighter. The detail of the grill is better on the top image as well. Nice experiment! ;-)

Well, lit, interesting backdrop, the pose of the car is a bit "wooden" but that is permissable in a car showroom. Of the two images I'd say the top image had the edge, but not in any significant way. I noticed in your accompanying text that you mentioned switching on high priority, this setting should not have any effect on the quality of the render, just the render time. High priority lets Bryce use 100% of the processing power available in a hyperthreading/duel core system, where as without this set, only 50% is used (the default state when bryce is launched). When I can rememeber I aways switch to High priority!

Again I am very thankful for the encouragement as well as the suggestions.

Rashad no worry about me being overwhelmed. It takes some time for things to sink in but after the light bulb comes on I can at least have a direction to start working from. Even from these comments I have picked up some more helpful tips.

While I was happy with the overall look i do agree that I could still be improved. I personally was not happy with the chrome as I was not sure what to do after removing the ambient. I tired a few things but will try using the Spectacular instead of using high reflection. The idea of reflecting light from the surrounding sources may work but I found it very difficult for this to work with the black on the car body. At fist I tried using a circle of lights using David's tutorial and placed them on the edge of the cylinder in different locations but did not find it affective in this situation. I am open for suggestions as to achieve this idea. I would like more of an explanation on "Uffizi HDR backdrop reflection over the car paint."

As for the so called curtain or material on the cylinder I used the Space Building material under the Architectural in the Materials lab. I had to make some adjustments to get a nice affect on the cylinder. I think I will make a real curtain as I have done this before in Carrara when I was working on the sanctuary model.

Hmmm "Wooden" ok I could have had the doors open and the trunk and maybe a different FOV Ha That is one thing I have noticed about you David is that you have a great imagination and that is what makes you work dramatic. Each one on the forum has a unique giftedness. Thanks for the tip on the High Priority I will try to check it from now on as I do have a duel core system.
