CabinTreesPano
Description: Cylindrical panorama of Cabin and Trees to show a few things. Upper picture has sun and a supporting radial to light the scene. Lower picture uses the HDRI as set in Trees additionally. The difference is subtle but noticable. The difference of the render times from the upper to the lower is less subtle: 13 times. The clouds have too much amplitude (see left and right) and 4 rays per pixel is definitely not enough to get a clean render.

Whoa! Alot to talk about here. This test is very intersting to me.

13 times the difference. It is because of the premium AA. Premium AA is a render killer, even on machines as fast as yours and mine. If it took this long on 4 rays per pixel with marginal results I can only imagine higher settings. I think the premiumm AA is only worth it at 36 rays and above.

The ibl version is clearly more evenly lit but it should be because you used more lightsources. The top render with just the sun and a single secondary radial for ambient light works well for this demonstration. Though for my money I think you could have used standard AA with nearly identical results in alot less time for the bottom image.

Excellent sky color. The right sky color can make or break a scene.

Are you planning to make this into an hdri?

I was unclear in my description, Rashad. There is only the sun and a radial without shadow casting as second sun to boost the weakling, no radial for ambience. Ambience comes from the haze setting. The lower picture was rendered with the HDRI Gossiping for ambient. Without haze, the centre mountains would be almost black on the upper picture.

Honestly, I like the top piece more. It just seems to have a better overall lighting to it. Great water effects.

I like this 360 perspective render. Both top and bottom look good, top more real because it has darker shadows and darker grass.

As a pano, the top one does look better to me, too and it's more photorealistic. However, if you zoom in to a particular region, the light of the lower one is better.

Every image suits its purpose, you've said it, Horo - if I wanted to glimpse at a true pano, I would have chosen the upper with exactly this resolution, but if I had to examine all the material's details (on of course a bigger render), I'd pick the lower one. Both pictures I find to my liking. Nice "test".
