Description: This is my final take before I try something else. I placed the birds further back and of course added the bystander. Improved terrain and tried a different water mat.

Keeps getting better and better. The terrains are spot on, nice range of elevation levels. Careful with the water mat. For me water is something Bryce can do quite well so I tend to think somewhat literally when using water mats. Water in real life is highly transparent, with very little if any diffussion, and surely no ambient. The water above seems cloudy in an unnatural way perhaps due to diffussion, ambient or lack of transparency. Without that transparency I tend to feel that water loses alot of it's magic. I think Horo's water mat was more realistic. But I think it is also great that you are experiementing with constructing your own materials. Remember with water that it is mostly clear in color and gains most of it's blueness from reflecting the sky.

Definitely the best yet. The water looks a bit "milky" as if it had a lot of sediments floating in it. You get results, Render Man, you really do.

This is what I get for not using Horo's water mat.I use it so much in my work that I thought I would switch brands but paid the price. In reality some nicer water mat with some movement would have looked better around the rocks. The important thing is to recognize what the picture needs. And your points are very true. But it was a free water mat so what can I say. I am sure it would look better in some other scene.

I find that it is an art to make a good terrain. If any of you know a good tutorial on this please let me know.

Don't sweat the water too much. Literal realism is not always the most important thing.

Thanks for the encouragement but you will find that I have a good sense of humor and one of the reasons I am on this site is to learn. So I am not hear to protect my feelings. I thought this was a good group as I was reading the posts as well as looking at the art work before I decided to enter my first picture.

Nice render. The water material isn't water, but I find it really interesting. I hope you haven't deleted this material. The thing I can suggest you here (you probably manage mats this way but..) is to save/store any more "special" material in your User folder. There are times when I personally need to render out some stored textures or materials and use the ready img for texturing again. This is an example. Just a thought. http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=1775
Keep on experimenting, my only wualm will be with the "bystander's" shadow. I notice how the stones are lit bit I don't see any shadow from the bird over it.

I think you are right about the water mat but is did come in some freebies I downloaded designated as water mats. I have to learn to take my time and do spot render to get a better feel for the whole scene.

I really did not like the stones materials as well as the lighting. I have been working with this scene as I did change the water mat and I still need to make other rock material to match the setting.

I am not sure what you find interesting about this water mat. What would you use it for? I am sure it could be changed in the materials lab.

Because I am new I don't have a ton of materials so the few I do have are in the pallet in Bryce. I am trying to be careful after making a mess out of my files in Daz. It took me a whole day to delete and start over.

I understand the freebies matter well and, of course, "not everything that glitters is gold" if you get my point. By saying "interesting" I meant that this mat looks kind of frosted and the reflection it provides appears blured. One of my favourite genres is Abstracts. So this "water" surface can be used in creating abstract images. It isn't necessary to use this kind of material and its shading properties if you are trying for realism. You already started experimenting and that's good. Further on (especially for realism) you should always use reference photos for the species of flora or fauna you struggle to mimic. It is way better to have something to look at side-by-side the img you're creating instead of only imagine things and hoping that those will work together once you hit the Render button.

You know. This makes me remember the replica contest you guys held a few years back. Replicas are nearly impossible to mimic perfectly, but they provide an incredible training on the proper finished looks of natural environments. I am always humbled instantly when I attempt my own replicas. Nature is so sweet!

We get the Simthsonian Magazine and they have an article on Rams this month. I just finished a picture I will post very soon. But is is fun trying to do something from my head also. Anther magazine is Country the March issue front cover is Monument Valley. And pictures between the front and back cover are beyond words.

richer, I looked at the picture you referred to did you do any post work to get the blur? Or did you set blur to the mats?

No, there wasn't any postwork on the "imperfect" image. I wrote it in the descr., it was all Bryce dof lens effect set to the max values of 256rays/pixel. This way it takes longer to render but the bluring becomes more smoother and less noisy.
