Q-Bix Box
Q-Bix Box

Q-Bix Box
Description: Hello! I haven't posted in awhile, because I've been busy with some study, exams and the game me and my roommate were making. Its development is nearly finished and here I present you my vision of the game's "boxed" version. As the title reads the name is "Q-Bix". I can't tell you much more at the moment :), just don't want to ruin the surprise.
The scene itself isn't something complex. The metal support parts I modelled in Maya, the main box texture was rendered in Bryce, exported as an image and later post-processed in PS along with additional painted layers such as the barcode for ex., Cd-rom sign, etc. After that I applied the texture to the box and rendered again. For the lighting I used 2 weak radials and "building_probe.hdr" (X=90, Y=0; qual 1024, int 10, hdri fx 10, rad 100; Linear falloff). Since some shadow banding was occuring even at quality=4096 I decided to render it at 1k qual. saving some render-time and later slightly gaussian-blur those shadows in PS. Through additional postwork I tried to match a real photo taken with middle-class camera, where at higher ISO speed some more pronounced noise and aberration start to occur.

Looks great. It makes me think of hexagon though. Hexagon uses a similar image. Thanks for the texhincal explanations on how you handled the shadow banding.

congrats! I am really happy that you have almost completed your game! Usually this types of projects don't go through without some extreme determination and support. You guys must be really good at what you do.
Now, about the image, I love the dust on the ground and the box, but on the side it doesn't look real, for a couple of reasons; one is that the edge is not visible, and two it doesn't have specularity I would put a lamp to the side of it just for that. DoF would also add much more realism. I really love the cover on the box, it does look like hext at first, but only because of the shape that you used, which is understandable. Great work!!!!!!!

Thank you, guys, really! Sorry for the late input here.

Rashad, now that you mention it the game logo does look a bit like the one on the Hexagon. This is due to the perspective I used to render the main texture. Q-Bix has do a lot with cubes and alike, so the logo had to express the general "concept". And, of course, any resemblance/likeness to trademark logos of software worldwide is purely coincidental. Our intentions are faaar away from copying someone's (c) and (tm).

Horo, thanks for the comment too. I also wish it to be a "commercial" success, but we ain't that "grown-up" just yet. This first game (and probably the second and third..) will be distributed as a freeware software with only a certain terms of usage to agree to. As soon as we finish, I'll post a thread + d-load link in the forum under Game Talk section in order to get feedback for further improvement. 1 or 2 weeks left :) for ver. 1.0

Spasibo, Gat! I admit, I did this image on a rush, time isn't enough for me to do anything with a deserved care lately so yes, as an image I can still work on it.
