For me the biggest difference is in the tir settings. In this case the higher the tir the lighter the image will be in the final render because the lgiht is allowed to bounce around more and strike more surfaces. Shadow depth is another important issue, in that it determines how many times the light is allowed to pass through a transparent surface before diaplaying black pixels. You can often shortcut render time by lowering the shadow depth, but it wiil mean more black pixels. The higher the tir and shadow depth the longer the render time.
