LEDs
Description: A simple enough challange - I thought - to make something that look like lit LED's. Hmn... but getting that opaque plastic effect was tricky. Modeled in wings3D. Each LED has three lights, a spot at the base pointing forwards, a point source with the spot and another at the tip. The "plastic" is only transparent (10) so not very, but does not cast shadows. The metal legs are also transparent. This is to avoid strong shadows. The plastic is also (horror of horrors) ambient, a channel lights the tip and the base useing altitude filters in object oriented mapping. Finally for the blue and the red another sphere was place in the tip (frosted glass material x-change relation) to brighten them up further and give an effect of lensing. So all in all, it turned out a bit fiddly. Rendered at primium 64 rpp DOF effect and soft reflections (controlled in the speculative halo of the ground plane material). About 9 hours to render.

I should add, the scene uses Horo's Dungeon Dimension SC HDR as a background image - no light provided by IBL. Just for something for the objects to reflect.

I think the test was a success. I do not feel that the ambient channel is at all horrible in this situation, In fact I always felt that it was these situations when objects really do radiate light that ambeint is appropriate. It's everyday objects that look crappy when ambient is applied. Love it. Dof indeed helps keep the scene small and intimate.

Wow! It's magic! Light without current. LOL

By the way, you forgot violet. ;-)

The DOF looks cool too. Nice job!

I've tried LED's before (Sam & Sal, image_id=2035) but I didn't do them so elaborate. What you've done here is an excellent job, everything fits. It's worth a fiver, don't you think?
