Metalwork
Description: Models made in wings3D and the scene lit with Horo's BelowBhutanBridgeSC.hdr (using 16 lights) and a single soft light source in the middle of the hot iron. Iron material from the x-change, slightly modified and the bacground, applied to a shallow terrain, Horo's RockwallShadow material, which he made available to us some time ago. Rendering with 64 rpp, soft shadows and DOF took about seven hours. The idea for the image came from looking at a photograph on google while searching for "hot metal". The glowing loop itself uses a varient of the Frosted Mirror material - again from the exchange, which uses transparency and some ambient to create an illusion of glowing.

Image updated after taking advice over "fade-out".

Image updated again with extra smoothing on the eyes.

Really really nice work! Original I must say! Excellent tex/mat on the ground, natural placement of all the objects, clever use of DOF. Does the ground texture have a bump also? The spot right under the glowing loop reacts very well to the "hot" light as if there was bump applied. Almost (if not entirely) a true photo, David. The minor thingy that gives the render away, and I could be wrong about it though, is that the heat from the incandescent part cooles too soon, too quick. Perhaps a little slower "fade-out" towards the other end of the metal rod would work better. That put aside, I'm voting top marks!

Thanks. Yes, I do think you are correct about the fade-out range. Also maybe it could do with being redder? I will see what I can do. Thanks for your observation. Also, yes the ground terrain has both bump mapping (from the material) and a degree of undulation, from the height map in the terrain - both are set at quite a subtle level.

Perfect, very realistic, everything looks like it should. The only thing that I notices is the lack of polygons at the bend, maybe a few more polys there, or one more smoothing level. 5/5 regardless

Image edited. I smoothed the models twice more in wings to add polys. Curiously this had the effect of making the final render nearly half again as long, just shy of 10 hours.

Sensible improvement over the previous picture! Thumbs up, David, impressive final result. With the further poly-smoothing and hot fade-out modification this img barely has a bryce equal. Since it is a new one, I can't see why wouldn't I give it 5 again!

My comment for the initial work seems to have been lost. Nothing to worry about, though. It has indeed improved and it is worth a fiver.

I can almost feel the heat off that one. The metal material is amazing! 5/5
