Forest Fire
Description: Bigger resolution and more volumetric fire. Plz note the red on the trees is due to the fire moving from the left (it was planned as a meteor explosion) side, the bark has burned off and the red glowing is left over, while the bark on the sides is yellow because it is burning burning.

Thanks for the higher res image, Gat. In your case - bigger is better. As a combination of trees and ground relief, I'd say that this is a very good looking forest. The DOF applied isn't too much, as people often go overboard here, just because they don't pay enough attention to the lens radius and use the default. Perhaps you've played around with it. The foggy background really "explains" that something is burning, though I'm not convinced that the trees could be that something. While the arrangement of the trees, the branch distribution and density work at 100% realistic, the fire I cannot percieve as successfull. It looks too solid, also the procedural pattern isn't the most appropriate here. My suggestions are to make the fire more transparent, add a little ambient glow, experiment with the "additive", shadow casting and shadow receiving options in the texture editor and let more nuances of dark orange, red within the fire-texture itself. You may find it a good idea to mix your fire with the David's azatoth plasma mat. I'm sure you'll work something out.

Thanks for the comment, and for the technical advice. I will try to change the texture of the fire to get it looking more realistic. I have forgotten all about turning additive on!

Ah - now I see what the fire is. In the previous one, I thought that was some odd foliage. Yes, richter is right (he usually is). The form of the flames is good but it looks too solid. Yellow is not all bad if the fire is that hot, though I would like to see a triffle orange here and there. I have done some fire things with moderate success but I have always shied away from such close-ups. Very brave to attempt that.

I like this scene very much, like the other I am not convinced by the fire, but to me that is not detracting from the appeal of the scene. The flames here could almost be autum leaves, which are afire - but in a less inflamitory sense. I think it would be fair to take the scene in either the direction of greater realims or make it more abstract. Very good.

Thanks. That fire texture is tricky to get right :(.
