CARLOS w/ CURLZ
CARLOS w/ CURLZ

CARLOS w/ CURLZ
Description: I promised last time there would be no more Carlos entries but I felt I could still do better so just one more could not be avoided. I also decided not to clip his eyebrows as I feel the brows help make the model unique and a touch less "cloned."

I discovered that the SSS had the effect of baking away the specularity. I increased the spec a bit. Hair is Natural Curls from daz3d. Comments?

Thanks for the help you all have given me so far.

I think maybe you might have overcooked it slightly with the specularity, he looks a bit greasy. Not so much as I would say that it was unrealistic, but just that he has greasy skin. The texture as before is excellent. Teeth are good. Eyes, I feel are still a bit lacking in depth. Almost right, but not quite. At this point I'd be thinking about postwork for final touches. The hair and his shirt lack the necessary model complexity to fit comfortably with the realism of your skin. If you could get everything to look as real is his chin it would be very difficult to tell if it was a photo or not. Lip colour I'm still not entirely convinced by, but you've got to take my criticisms with a pinch of salt since I'm a pasty skinned englishman with crooked stained teeth and five days of beard growth, about to start my winter hybernation. So minor suggestions asside, excellent work. 5/5

Thanks David for the 5ver. I agree 100% with all of your suggestions. The specularity probably is too high now. He looks greasy as you say. The hair and clothing models are low in polygon complexity, as are most daz clothes when viewed up close. They always say as a selling point on the website that renders up close can be performed, but the low quality of the meshes becomes too obvious for me to believe they are real. I may take this up in Carrara where dynamic hair can fix all of that along with mesh smoothing to iron out the "kinks" of the models.

yes, same as dave. nice job rashadcarte.
I really like the way you made the eyes look, those look very good.

Also, I think that a blue light should be added on the back to the right, and the lights in front should be moved over to the left so that the blue light affects the shadows parts. Also, try rendering this with just one light, no ambient.

Good choice to not changing the eybrows. I've known some chaps with such bushy things. The hair looks to me like bits of cassette tape, because of the colour (which is good) and because they are ribbon-like curled. Not your fault. I like the eyes except for the slight hazy look. This could be probably corrected with postwork. For me, the eyes look very realistic and one could almost attempt an iris diagnosis. The lip colour has again improved but is still not completely right. I also perceive this face as a bit greasy.

Yes, the models are chunky. I could easily model a better looking hair in Maya. I would do so but I feel that I might be borrowing a bit too specifically from 3d Celebrity. Of all of the hair models offered on the Daz site, this one struck me as especially risky to introduce. Yet such an "ethnic" seeming hair was long overdue. I probably should smooth out the mesh a bit before I post any more close-ups.

Oh yeah, he's a grease monkey. A woman I work with said that he looked sweaty and that it made him look a touch sexy or something like that. But mind you, she has a well known tendancy to be attracted to guys she actually feels sorry for. Perhaps Carlos or maybe even myself should avoid washing my face every day, perhaps someone will feel sorry for me too.

The eyes are for me fairly good also. I think that I need to play around more with the specularity and reflection settings. In truth the irises are real human irises. I searched on the internet for high resolution photos of real irises and found some really amazing stuff. Some of them were 4000x4000 pixels, more than enough detail for a close-up. The blurry/glassiness comes from the white sofa in Livin'Large being reflected into the eyes, especially the character's left eye. From different angles that glassiness disappears.

The lips are perhaps impossible to get right. It is much easier I'm finding with females as they can be assumed to be wearing make-up of any color. We shall see.

Risky it is, Rashad, the hair. As a last comment I haven't got much to add here. Most has been said. At 640x the hair looks a bit better. Of course when high res is involved, high details are to be expected. I know your concentration in the last couple of weeks went on the skin, and I (as before) am still impressed with the results. More shiny skin here, though no loss of realism to me. Concerning the hair -
you know me, I'd advise you (mentioning Maya) to make the hair by yourself, but that's just me.
Teeth look better, eyes also. As a whole the spots that need work, I believe you can handle them all. It is a matter of time to see more from you in this certain direction.

He looks like What's His Face. SHOOT! Darn OldTimer's disease! ;-)

One thing though, his hair looks like ribbons. I'll never understand these new fangled hair styles. At least it's not some ghastly unnatural color, like maroon or candy grape. ;-)
