Wolf test
Description: Ughhh! I've been working on putting hair on the poser wolf for quite some time (countless hours), using several photos found on the web as references. Can't seem to get even close to realism - looks more like a stuffed toy. There are 8 or 9 different hair groups, each has some issue. The face and legs are the worst; I really need to make the hair longer but also lay it completely flat, which I can't seem to accomplish. The coloring seems to show the most potential. There are so many things, such as hair thickness, that can be tweaked, and will make huge differences. I think I need a break from the project.

hmm, I think I agree 100% with all that you wrote above. The dymanic hair is not so easy to control especially on a dog. The color looks almost of stripes and that does not look quite right to me. Hey, take a break like you said and build something in good old bryce. I'm sure that when you come back to it you will be engergized. The dog is nicely posed!

Part of the reason it looks like a toy is because of the lighting. I would use HDRI as a light source and a backdrop if I was you, just make sure to add a simple 2D plane for a shadow catcher.

Now, the hair on the dog is not so bad, in some places it is too long, and in others its too short, or doesn't have enough density. I would make a hair group for the face, body, tail, and feet. After you are done making you hair groups and shading. Click on drape or simulate in order for the hair to fall down naturally themselves instead of having to brush them. You can adjust hair "strength" for more drape.

Don't let it see the Eye in the previous image or it will come to life and become a DEMON DOG!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!

Ok...Ok.. I'll stop. ;-)

This one looks like a puppy having a bad hair day but it looks cute just the same. ;-)

I tried playing with hair in Poser once but I wound up pulling all my own hair out in the process. ;-)

I admire anyone who has the patience to stick with that stuff. I've never been good with characters. I guess that's why I love abstracts so much. There are no rules and as long as you wind up with something cool looking you can sit back grinning and call it a success. ;-)

I tried drape but it didn't look right. The hair on the back should be reasonably flat and parallel with the back. Drape won't do that on the sides. The hair on the legs should be long but tightly flat against the legs - can't seem to simulate that.

No suggestions from me, hair is yet beyond me. However, looking at the back of the head, it looks like a promising start for a lion's mane.

The hair tool is facinating but getting anything like realistic fur is a nightare. Here you have made a valient effort and I think your own observations are correct so I won't labour your own points. Good try, don't be too discouraged by the results, it is early days yet.
