Brave Knights
Description: The knights and their outfit are from DAZ3D. The background is the well known ?The Forgotten Halls?, http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=1702 later renamed to ?Dungeon Dimension? by David. He was kind enough to render his artwork to my specifications so I could make a king size light probe from it.

It's size of 8'000 x 4'000 pixels and memory footprint of 380 MB brought all my programs to their limit. Once the HDRI is loaded, Carrara 6 pro works as swiftly as ever. I have no software to create larger light probes and therefore do not know whether Carrara would accept larger ones.

The resolution to render the HDRI as background is sufficient. Tone-mapping by Carrara is not. There is too much contrast and too high colour saturation. In fact, it looks quite similar to what Bryce shows for the same light probe. Carrara is very limitted in mapping an HDRI correctly, in fact you can use 0? horizontal with Flip Vertical enabled and 180? without Vertical Flip only - if you want the HDRI rendered visible in the background. Other horizontal angles dip the HDRI and it is vertical at 90? and 270?.

I must add that I'm a complete nut as far as knowing Carrara is concerned (this is by no means conclusive list of my nuttyness). The Intensity for the background is set to 150%, the Sky Light Intensity to 125%.

"I must add that I'm a complete nut"

BROTHER!!!!! :-)

One of my favorite philosophies is that "Sane people are BORING!" That's why I was baptized in Graham Chapman's favorite church, Saint Loonie of the Cream Bun and Jam. ;-)

As for the image I can only say "I WAN'T CARRAR 6 PRO!!!!!!!!" LOL

The HDRI does provide some interesting lighting effects too. (I better say that so people actually think I'm not just whining again) ;-)

.

Same as I said before, very nice job.
Now, about the soldiers, why are they scratched like that? Is the camera too close? They fit very nicely into the surrounding area.

Scratched soldiers - well, I dunno where that comes from. I've noticed and though it looks interesting; I did say above that I'm a nut.

Scratched? I think you mean stretched? One little letter makes all of the difference. The distortion of the soldiers seems to be the result of the pov.

I remember when David first posted that scene and i thought it was one of the most amazing renders bryce had ever performed. The red and blue are fantastic. For me the light from this probe provides is not my favorite, but as a backdrop it is astonishing. I can see where the tug to include things into this little world comes from.

Also thanks for the example of a crisp background in Carrara. You are right in describing that Carrara does no better of a job of this scene than bryce does. But if you were to engage the Gi funcytions like AO there would be a visible difference.

Ah - stretched

Yes, Rashad has got it right. The camera was set to a focal length of 15 mm which is a wide angle lens, nearly a fisheye and the more an object moves off centre and the nearer to the camera it is, the more it gets distorted.
