Alien Queen
Description: Blender model and rig by Franz Munz
@ antaressith@gmx.ed
he modeled it from a plastic version of the alien, so it has some toy parts, which you all will ignore from now on ;)

I did some step traicing to find the link again:

So, what am I doing here? Experiments! I am testing the reflections blurr feature on the infinte ground plane, unfortunately at the near end it was taking up too much ram with the sky light enabled, so I had to stop it. Also, the alien has SSS.

The background is an hdri, isn't it? I think I remember having seen it before. The figure on the plane and the plane itself are both very interesting. Since it is standing on the ground which is not yet hit by direct sunlight, the absence of shadows is plausible. The problem is where the groundplane cuts the background. You did a good job on the left side, but the more to the right you look, you see that the scene is wrong. Nevertheless, interesting experiment.

Hey cutey. Do you come here often? hehehe

Actually it reminds me of a grammar school teacher I once had. She was a monster too. ;-)

Seriously though, the Alien we probably the only Sci Fi monster that truly scared me, not because of what it looked like but because of the idea behind it. Using humanoids as incubators for it's offspring? That's what I call horrible.

I once had a book of the original H. R. Giger artwork for the Alien movie and to be honest the design that was eventually used wasn't the scariest one of the lot. There was one that probably would have given people heart attacks if it was made to look alive. YIKES!

As for the image as a whole I have to agree with Horo. I'll add that the sharpness of the ground plane combined with the soft focus of the background looks all wrong and the ground plane is too bright in general.

A fun idea would be to get a huge cast iron sculpture of this beast and replace the Merrill Lynch bull on lower Broadway in Manhattan with it, then stand back and watch the commotion. LOL

A few things. The queesn model is spectacular. The hdri is incredible. The lighting techniques used are most effective. I really like the feeling of the sky influence. Skylight is hard to deny. Did you enable full indirect light in the GI options? Though the queen has no texture I like the way the light appears to strike her. The ground plane has it's issues but you were always aware of this. Great experiment!

well it was just the first test, I posted it here because I thought the blurry reflections under the alien looked very realistic.

I did not use GI, sky light was the only source of lighting, I find that outdoor scenes are much too bright to see the light produced by indirect lighting, the image will loose realism, like for example a real photo in the desert sun will show black shadows.

The right side could have actually helped me if only I built a platform and used DoF.
