Vacation Photo 37
Description: A few techniques at work here. First is the lighting as I am still playing with the idea of using blue sky with sun .hdri to mimic the skylight effect of Carrara. Shadow intensity has been lowered a bit to allow the hdri to illuminate the undersides of the models. Foliage transparency used for the foreground plants and ambient (yes, evil ambient) was used for the palms, very minimal of course and with the lowered shadow intensity alot of light comes up from underneath so very very little ambient was necessary.

Most of the attention went into the humans trying to get a good looking skin ranging from light to dark. I should have changed Victoria4's eye color to something more plausoble than blue since she has dark skin.

What do we all think? Feedback welcome and appreciated!

10/5 no doubt everything looks perfect, the triple shadows are due to the hdri so all you can do there is just increase the number of samples and that will take a long time to render as we all know, so its all good. skin looks great on both of them. trees buildings plants this is a superb piece of work rashadcarter, nice job!!!!

Very well composed and lit - much better then the vast number of similar images out there. And don't worry about the color of her eyes, you can't tell anyway.

Spot on. Very plausible vacation photo. Perhaps a higher quality setting and soft shadows if your computer is idle for the next week or so ;) Minor quibbles I had to search for. 5/5.

Great work. Very nice detail. I love your palms. Spectacular! Only one question???? Why are'nt they sitting in the chairs? It looks like they would be a little more comfortable anyhow. Oh, but you still get a 5 from me as well!

I really can't find anything else to add. Top notch work! 5/5

One thing, is there a reason you used the same material on both swimsuits? Just sharpening my ATD quotient. ;-)

Yes the dresses, we know the pattern for the dresses from Room Design. I forgot to mention it, I had recognised it immediately. Very universal pattern, fits here and there.

Thanks all for the positive feedback. Alas, as often when a scene develops more or less as I want it to, the file went screwy at save time and the source file was lost!!!!! ARGHH! Daz has got to fix this drama!

Okay specified answers. The people are not seated on the chairs because the chairs were an after-thought, they were the very last elements added. The original concept had the people seated on the ground. But once the chairs came to be I did consider placing the people on them but the poses would need to be made from scratch, and I am not patient enough for the posing process I have learned. Good poses are very difficult for me. The matching bathing suits came from me needing a way to make the characters appear to be connected as people who know one another well and enjoy each other's company, like a husband and wife on their vacation. I also really like the texture itself and can imagine a cheesey couple dressing up alike for a vacation in the tropics.

I have been relying on hdri for lighting recently so I have been at a loss for clouds, as bryce clouds are so false looking to me most of the time. I have alot of cool volumetric tricks I could use but volumetrics fail to produce good results in ibl situations. I will need to render my skies separately with traditional lighting before I can produce the skies I want out of volumetrics.

Again thanks all, I really rely on your feedback in order to improve.
I have lost the source files to about 4 images. This is just the latest. It pains me because I would consider further edits but kharma dictates otherwise.

Too bad you've lost the source, Rashad. Here's my feedback. This image is worth a true 5er. You know how to deal with the posing also, it Is a hard work, I know. The male character looks a bit stiff btw, while the female's sitting pose is very natural, very unconstrained. Lots of leaves and plants. I especially like those palms Tina was talking about. The interaction between light and branches there is quite realistic. Underneath the characters I think perhaps you should've put a carpet or some big towel to fit nicely to the wooden floor. The floor has some nice textures selection applied, and your effort to randomize the planks is more than obvious, nice job there too. Chairs are acceptable edition to the image. The building in the back has very good material on it, I like it because of its grainyness, I just wonder if this is thanks to the quality of AA or there was a bump in the material itself. Either way some good lookin' result. Maybe another floor above this one to fill-up the space for the sky. I'm saying this because the gradient of the sky you're using is most visible only on the far right side of your image (just above the low palms tips is getting brighter). The sky above the building stays solid blue and I find this not very realistic. The skin of the both characters is a successfull hit. The left leg of the male is shining a little too much, but if there was a some oil around, I'd understand. I just can't see it :) As I whole I think if you lower the contrast of this image, so the green and the red of the plants were less saturated, the things will look even more realistic.

Great points Richter. Thanks for the detailed review. Yes, a towel or something would have been great and very easy to produce with a proper terrain. The haze could have been set higher so that the gradient became visible a bit higher up. And yes, vegetation saturation levels could have been more carefully considered. Finally details are misssing , like oil cans and corono bottles or margarita glasses. It needs to look more of a party. I agree 100%. Thanks for the five and most of all for the two cents!!
