Bewildered
Description: The bewildered green bug-eyed monsters are the ?Toon Aliens? from DAZ3D. The background is the well known ?The Forgotten Halls?, http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=1702 later renamed to ?Dungeon Dimension? by David. He was kind enough to render his artwork to my specifications so I could make a king size light probe from it.

It's size of 6'400 pixels diameter and memory footprint of 390 MB brought all my programs to their limit. Changing parameters in the IBL lab produces an 'out of memory' alert, which can be clicked away and the changes are accepted anyway. Saving the file with the full sized HDRI was not possible anymore but at least the picture rendered could. Computer has 2 GB of memory, so that's not the issue.

The resolution to render the HDRI as background is sufficient. Tone-mapping by Bryce is not. The boosted red coulour is a result of a high saturation and/or low gamma setting. I don't know what tone-mapping algorithm Bryce uses to show the light probe. Using a smaller variant of this light probe, I could tone-map it as bad as shown here using the Reinhard alg with a gamma of 1 and luminosity boosted up to 1.5. Using the same alg with a gamma of 2.2 and a luminosity of 1 tone-maps the colours correctly.

I have to add that Carrara 6pro also tone-maps it the same way, so it is not better. IBL settings were Quality 256, Intensity 10 and HDRI-Effect 60. Rendered as 1600 x 1200 in less than half an hour.

Horo this is great! I love it! Very funny. Nice composition there. I like the green alien skin opposed to the background. If it was just the probe for the background and not any additional objects in scene, I could give 5/5 only for creating such a nice hdri. By the way, is the alien in the spaceship part of the hdr probe or you placed him there in the back manualy? The only thing here that strikes me as odd is the teeth of the Toon Aliens are as shiny as the eyeballs. But those aren't humans so I guess that wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Excellent co-work with David once again! Top vote!

I was wondering how you got the hdri to work inside the building, once I read your post it became clear that this is an hdri in itself, no wonder it looks this clean the resolution is huge. very nice!
also, does carrara handle hdris with the same RAM limitations?

Amazing. This image looks like it was made with a much more powerful program than bryce, this looks like Cinema4d or something. Really fine work. Question: how did David render a 6400 pixel version of this scene when bryce only allows 4000?

The characters are terrific with their silly postures and expressions. Love it. A sure 5x5!

Richter: spaceship comes along with the too aliens. I posed the alien into it and exported it from D|S, than imported and placed it in Bryce. Yes, those aliens use a very agressive toothpaste, that's why the teeth are so reflective - I did it on purpose.

Gat - Carrara takes just a deep breath to load the equivalent 8000 x 4000 probe and once loaded, it is swift as ever.

Rashad - David rendered the 6 faces of a cube as 2400 pixel square. I assembled those in Photoshop to a vertical cross and transformed this into an angular map. There were a couple of more steps involved than that, but that's essentially it.

Thanks for your nice comments. I also like it for its silliness. It reminds me of the movie "Alien Adventure" http://www.nwave.com/ (Films > Large Format Films > Alien Adventure 3D).

The expression on the alien faces is priceless! And finally a hdr background that does not look like it has been brushed over with petrolium jelly. Well done!
