SOLDAT
SOLDAT

SOLDAT
Description: Its called Soldat, one of Atlantis's most feared worriers.

Anyhow, model in blender, the model was rendered with lighting taken into account from the photo position, AO was used, fake SSS on skin, and displacement mapping for veins.
Here is the sketch + some more details:

A beautiful model! Nice reflection on the armor. I like the whole design very much. Hard work payed off there I assure you! You've menaged to achieve both very earthly and alien atmosphere at the same time. From what I read in your comment at animepaper.com I see you made the background in PShop (including the grass). The grass by itself looks great, but opposed to the character looks a bit too lightened, while the Soldat's hands and legs remain dark. Maybe a bit more color burn randomly on the blades here and there will blend it better and loose the ordered placement, which is partly visible (I can clearly see the row of low grass in front against the tall in the back). Because of your "bold" description in animepaper I hope I didn't make you hate your day :) Very appropriate lighting condition for the back-lit character in combination with the sky. At the start I thought of writing you that this Soldat looks lonely there in the field, but the more I look, the more I'm conviced it is better this way. Full marks!

Mr. Barashkov, Gat, I didn't now what an artist you are. Seeing all of your works publushed on the other site, made me think twice before I lay any unnecessary and inappropriate criticism here. "Hacked!", "The Ghost of a Warrior", "Blood" - impressive wallpapers, but most of all I liked the "Shell". I would really like to see the "Shell" posted here.

why thanks richter! I can see what you are saying about the grass, it was very difficult indeed and I never really was happy with it.
Also, I want to make very clear that a few of those walls had scans used in them, scans are the actual images made by the artists I either modified them or vectored them, and placed on a background.

thnx for the comment richter, oh and I do love me some unnecessary criticism as I myself like to give a lot of that at times :)

Nice modeling and atmosphere. Looks like he's holding a halbard - I wish the head of it wasn't cut off.

don't worry, there isn't really much there, I ran out of ideas and patience by the time I got to making a weapon.

Nice work gat. Question, what program did you render this in, Blender?. It looks like you rendered it many months ago, long before you purchased Carrara so please explain. Also, how did you fake the SSS?

Grass as mentioned could use some work but the effect as is is still noteworthy!

Thanks rashad, have I been more familiar with blender I would have used hair particles to generate the grass and some hair on the model. and yep this was made many month ago. It was rendered in blender, at the time blender didn't have SSS, so some very smart people wrought a script that used a shadow buffers and other tricks to get the SSS.

Adding grass this way always looks a bit 2D-ish. Here, however, the view angle permits it. Though it looks peaceful, that soldier is sure somebody to keep out of the way.

thanks Horo, I feel the same way, the grass at this angle can be 3D and still look flat.
