Derbyshire 9 in Carrara 5 Pro
Description: Instead of using Carrara fancy pants render options to make this scene, I've resorted to "Brycesque" techniques to control the lighting effects. Hence the use of Fog for the distance and a suplimentry lighting for the foreground. Also in use is the interesting suface replication feature, which controlled by a shader element take from the foreground shader (manufactured mostly by myself) constrains the trees to the shores of the lake and stops then rising up onto the rocks or going too far up the hills. Two terrains, two trees, an infinate plain, two surface replicators and some fog. Render time about thirty minutes.

I think it looks good, maybe a few thousand more trees, and SKy Light would be nice. Thats a good looking fog, did you use 4D clouds? Also, you do know that Carrara6 upgrade is out?

Yes, this looks good. The fog patches are fantastic. If you had done this in Bryce, it would look better. Though I've installed C6 along with DS 1.7.1.5 a week ago, I couldn't muster the courage to do something with them, yet.

David-style. I could recognize this kind of image from a thousand miles. It is just beautiful. I especially like the mist above the lake. It brings a lot to the realism of this piece. The sky color is nice. I would have to agree with Gat about the number of trees. With more trees in this picture the flora will be richer and if you import the daz crow or another bird (an eagle or a hawk perhaps) in the sky, this work of yours will have no equal in scenery realism!

I enjoy the fog quite abit as well. I would think to remove the lower right corner hill. It seems to degrade the water abit. Love how the trees look. Fogs great, and the Skies pretty nice.

Over-all, great! The advice you've received seems spot on. I agree that the skylight is your best bet, since it functions exactly like and hdri, it is the most realistic option by far. In bryce we would be afraid to add too many trees, but in Carrara we can tree away easily. I just downloaded c5 pro to get c6 for free but I have not seen a link yet for me to download it. I want the dynamic hair/grass feature.

These Carrara skies are nice and deep blue, but sometimes I fail to be convinced by these dark colored skies, they look almost too dark at times. Nice work on the water and the mist!

Carrara skies are not physical skies, but are close to it, I wish they would include physical sky as an option.

Thanks! The fog is just standard fog. I've not meddled with the 4d option, I guess I just took it from the name that it was something to do with animation and so had best leave well enough alone. Oh yes, I've downloaded version6 but not had chance yet to install it. (on the subject of which, Horo, download the newly available DS 1.7.1.6 - apparently that is required if you want to import models). I was lucky with the fog patches, but they only showed up really well when the shadows were really deep. Hence my reluctance with any sort of global lighting and resorting to standard tricks. Currently I think there are 20,000 trees in this scene - but a lot of them are hidden in the shadows in the distance. I was frightened of making more - after my experiances in Bryce. Maybe I will be braver in the future? I wish Bryce could make skies like terragen or Carrara for that matter, but I would prefer the option in Bryce. Carrara is good, don't get me wrong, but I find Bryce easier to get on with.

I have no experience with Carrara whatsoever. But the trees lack variety. Is there a way you could use other trees to get more of a real forest look? I also agree with the suggestion to remove the hill. Texturing is great, sky is beautiful, water is exceptional. One other thing. I've known a good way to make a shoreline realistically meet water. Where the peninsula meets the water, the tip looks strange. Could you add foam or something? Just an idea. Anyway, a very good scene. You get my 5.
