Sculpture park in Carrara 5 pro
Description: The same model as in Sculpture park (inspired by the SigGraph2007 convention building) made in wings3D. Using global lighting and indirect lighting under a "realistic sky" setting (no basic ambience) and a lot of virtual photons flying around (16,000). I very much like the quality of the light produced, but beside Bryce's render I think it looks a little sterile. Even with the addition of some red balls to liven things up...

Lighting is excellent. Love Global Illumination!

very nice, I already commented on the other one. I recomend using about 200,000 photons for more quality, and the same for caustics, which you didn't use in this scene? Also, I don't like the way water looks in carrara at all, I think its one of carrara's biggest weaknesses.

Is there banding in the sky or is it just me?

Yeah, there's banding. Subtle, but it's there. I like the sky, the dark solid color gives it a surrealistic appeal. I like the splash of red, but the plastic look is a little too much. Otherwise, great.

now that I look at it again I see loss of detail and lack of quality in GI. You should turn up precision to about 25%, Light quality to Excellent, and light accuracy should be okey at 16 pixles. oh and 150,000photons

The model is nice, it does look somewhat sterile here, but then, it is an isolated object and it's just fine that way. Banding - I dunno. Perhaps a JPEG-effect? Hard to say without having seen the uncompressed BMP or TIFF.

I agree with Gat, about the caustics. It'll be great to see some of the waves/ripples "bouncing" all over the structure and especially on the shaded places. This is a touch of realism Bryce still isn't capable of producing.

The banding - yes, Bryce's 48 bit dithering does away with this issue (to some extent) I don't know if Carrara has a similar option, but it would be useful to get rid of the banding. I've noticed it in several images, but I don't know what to do about it - yet. No caustics... no - I've not really learned how to use them without weird things happeing (sometimes weird and interesting - but often inappropriate and unrealistic) maybe I've not thrown enough photons at the scene? I've been modest in my experiments so far. I'll keep trying stuff. Thanks for your suggestions and guidence!
