Description: Seeing the link to the SigGraph 2007 I followed it and was immediately taken with the design of the convention centre. Rather than recreate the whole building - which would have been a tall order! I just noodled away in wings3D with a few of the elements that attracted me and came up with this shape. Thanks to Horo for MysticalWood.hdr (not only for making this hdr but also pointing out what good lighting it provides). It is also displayed as a background, not an option I often take because of the clash in "qualities" between rendered image and background but I rather liked the effect of it here.

I too was wowed by the photos of the building, great model dave. I really like the way this looks, the water and the hdri a creating a very nice affect, if only the hdri was a higher resolution that would have been nice. Great job on the hdri, Horo.

Nice work. The hdri is very good. I hope that the issue of background vs light proprtion for ibl/hdri is addressed soon. To get enough light I usually have to bump the background up so high it washes it out, no good. The Carrara scene has superior lighting tools and bryce would not have an easy time challenging it.

rashadcarter, you don't have to do that, just change the lighting mode to linear, etc... and play around with the radius.

Hmm, you speak wise words my friend. I will have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion!

It's more attractive than some of the eyesores I've seen in Manhatten these days. ;-)

Nice modeling job and the HDRI does have a nice way of lighting the scene.

Very nice, indeed. I like the effect of the water surface. Shape looks very interesting and the shades from blue to brown look great. The backdrop works superbly here.

The HDRI is an artwork of David's. I just converted it to an HDRI. Bryce can be used to create spherical panoramas and if rendered as backdrop, it could be easily made larger by rendering the artwork with a larger size. However, Bryce currently can only handle light probes up to a diameter of about 6000 pixels - and it gets quite sluggish.

I'm not sure gat addressed Rashad's comment correctly. The problem in Bryce is indeed to get light and backdrop into harmony. If there is ample light (strong light source), Intensity can be set low enough for the background image and HDRI-Effect can be adjusted along with Linear or Log. As I see it, Bryce uses linear tone-mapping only and this limits the use of the HDRI as backdrop. DAZ has been made aware that the backdrop has to be separated from the light-giving probe and needs separate controls - 8 to 12 in order to tone-map it.

I remember how some of the Debevec's hdrs look like when they were rendered as a backdrop in Bryce, but this one, MysticalWood.hdr, looks way better in quality and light emission. Good team-work David, Horo! The water surface is absolutely convincing, especially those ripples behind the construction. The construction itself reminds me of bronze-made statues placed in modern art exhibitions. Well done!

Thanks!

Very few hdr's stand up to the test of being rendered as a background in Bryce, asside from their lack of resolution, their "blurriness" has a particular texture of it's own which is not really suitable - kind of "jaggy" - I don't know how quite to describe it, but this texture is distracting and difficult to hide. This hdr produces a fairly even dome of light in a variety of different colours, which is an effect I find quite pleasing and to my way of thinking suits complex geometries, such a probe would not, for example, be appropriate for a landscape, where a stong single light source might seem more natural. Carrara may have better lighting, but I find the interface more stodgey and less intuitive.
