Waypoint
Description: The trees are from DAZ3D (X-Frog), so is the old tower ruin (Stonemason). Two side-by-side tiled terrains make up the foreground, there is a copy of them with noise for the small stones. The background is again a copy of these terrain, resized with the "Advanced Glacier closeupSnow" material I once got from David. The material for the foreground is selfmade. The sky is a 2D face made from two stitched together photographs and lit from below by a radial. The scene is lit by the sun and a supporting radial.

How beautiful! I love mountains and pines. Is that a spruce in the foreground? So much detail! The sky is nice and crisp. What are all the specks on the ground? They are white and tan. I noticed the mountain ranges looked familiar. Are the stones on the hill a man made set or are did they spring up from nature? Sorry so many questions. Wish I were there right now. 5 for sure!

The stitched photographs look very good as a backdrop. I can't see any joins. Better scale than just a single photo image. I feel that perhaps there is a little too much haze in this image, the distant mounts seem a little too bluish. Water and trees look good, but the ground terrain is not to my tastes, it seems a little overpowering and is dominating the scene somewhat.

Very good! The lighting is very very good. The sky looks amazing. To me, this image is almost like a true photo all except the ground material, which I think does a very good job until one gives it a second look. Procedurals are great but very flat. I wish bryce had what carrara is getting with dynamic hair, it could be used to create dynamic grass. 3d grass would look much better than a procedural but in bryce the procedural is all we have to work with and I think you've done a great job of it. Excellent!

I agree with what been said, what I would like to add is that some of the trees blend with the ground, might be because of the material settings, or not enough contrast in the shadows, maybe some DoF too would be nice.

The color choices here are very good. There's a lot of green in your scene, but it is low-saturated and doesn't "disturb" the eye, thus driving your work closer to a real landscape. The scene seems evenly lit and the way the far mountains blend with the photo, makes the overall impression even more sweet.
Now, there are a few things which I'm not so fond of; for example the little lake down there. Due to the camera pov I can't really tell the exact scale of it, is it bigger then the tree next to it or is it smaller; as the only visible "oasis" it begs to have more detail around. But then you'll have ot reconsider the terrain relief, which I actually like, but this kind of terrain will suit to more homogenous, more uniform material. That is not to say I don't like them, they're both very good made, just the combo isn't that much of a success. The terrain material will be very effective if you're illustrating low mountains, covered with trees and grass and the viewer is several hundred meters above.

Considering that I just wanted to fool around a bit and give myself a bit of a rest from HDRI and IBL, I got more praise than I would have expected.

David says the terrain is a bit "overpowering" - I thought of it as "very rich", but we essentially agree. The "specks" on the ground, as Tina calls them, are probably a a bit too ostentatious. The black and grey stones are the Old Tower Ruin from DAZ. Looks all a bit strange in this light. There is a fir tree near the water that should show that it is only a puddle.

The haze - I added it on second thought and then eliminated part of it in Photoshop afterwards. I wasn't that fond of it, either. I think richter made a point saying "... just the combo isn't that much of a succcess". But then, flawed work gives constructive feedback (always look at the bright side). Thanks to all of you for your helpful comments.
