Night Forest
Description: I changed the sky and lighting, added trees on the far mountain. I couldn't get the same full moon with realistic sky, so I used regular Sky lab, which surpassed my expectation for what I wanted to do, I couldn't however find a star field option in Carrara, anyone? The only postwork here are the stars which were added in GIMP in about two minutes. Render time 1 1/2 hours with soft shadows on.

Sky with haze around moon looks good. It is too bright to show that many low magnitude stars. With this brightness, you wouldn't see stars fainter than mag 2.

The scene does not profit from this lighting setup. Looks like a 2D billboard, the distant hills appear to be at the same distance. And the background beyond enhances that billboard feeling.

I know what you mean, but am afraid you saying the impossible as far as I know, and as far as my skills go. This is a night, so the only light source is from the moon, and barely from the sky just enough to light up a few feet in front. I remember being outside at night with the moon shining and looking at the forest/ mountains and everything would appear to look flat just as you mentioned. DoF through I think might help.
Other then that I am open to suggestions for lighting setup.

It's almost like we are in outer space again trying to figure out how to make things visible yet plausible. My skills are no sharper than yours gat, in that I have no idea what to suggest. Have you tried the GI tools? There should be some way to maximize on the light. Maybe a camper with a flame or something could give us an idea of scale and provide some light at least in a corner. Nightime scenes are very challenging.

If you are going for the kind of reality a photographic camera captures, you're absolutely right. The eye, however, adapts and if it is not looking straight at the moon, the pupils open and thus the forest is perceived brighter. Just like in an outer space scene, where the shadows would be pitch black if no athmosphere scatters some light. If you want it that way, it's ok and it is real. This is an artist's choice. To get the foreground as the human eye would perceive it, you'd had to resort to photograph the scene as an HDRI and tone-map it appropriately. Using a raytracer, you would either add some haze and render as volumetric world, or use one or more faint secondaries or empoy a light probe. When I say this scene does not profit from this lighting setup, I mean that this is my impression, not that it is wrong. And the choice the artist takes is always right.

Right, from and eye and a camera there is a lot of difference, but we always see 2D images on the screen or a photo. The haze is something I overlooked, I will try and find fog in carrara.
