BforNT IBLoaded
Description: IBL is hard, IBL is mean.. but I menaged to rework this image. The hdr probe used was "beach_probe.hdr", which turned out to be the most undistorting to the render of all other probes I have on my HDD. The thing is that in a scene with this number of obj-s everything gets so buggy and unstable and sluggish that even the innocent combo of Ctrl+Z destroyes hours and hours of work. Anyway.. The beach probe did not provide any shadows in scene (strange?!), though the effect I tried to achieve is visible - smooth lightspread everywhere. All the shadows were hand-painted, so were the volcano cracks, lasers, missiles, smoke traces behind them, the planet with sunrise effect, lightning storm, hot "veins" of the cooling pair of infector pincers. I want to thank Icecreamman for the link to the slab cloud tutorial. The sky was rendered separately from the rest of the scene due to an enormous slowdown of my machine when rendering with both ibl and slab clouds. Motion blur added with Photoshop; scene rendered with Fine anti-alias 9rpp took almost a day, the sky itself with normal AA took 3 hours; everything combined (without the logo) count 32 layers in PS. You know that I hate to repeat myself so I had to do all that's above in order to utilize your feedback without copying the previous entry, guys. Yes, it's even more hotter with even more action. Rashad, you asked me to do this one so bear the consequences with me :) I hope you all will like this final entry.

Richter, you are trully gifted. I think the scene looks more realistic in many ways. The original lit with secondary lights was spot on, this one is even more powerful thanks to the IBL. Thanks for entertaining my request. I think the results speak for themselves. Sky is more dynamic and helps further the telling of the story.

I think a testament to your lighting abilites is that this version is not far and away better than the original. The two are fairly comprable in my view, though this one is surely more crisp. Excellent work!

Indeed this is really good, the sky is really well done with that planet. But I feel as if there are some issues with the lighting, as you said there were no shadows, there should have being from the HDRI so something gone wrong in that area. Do you have Carara5? You can use surface replicate to create a huge number of soldiers without the need of more RAM. I rendered a scene with 140 tree instances on my 256MB RAM computer, Carrara used about 180MB of it and rendered in 40 minutes with sky light on. (unfortunately I lost the image when I resized it to a thumb ans then saved and couldn't undo because windows in dumb).

I think it deserves a 10/5!

A staggering good piece. No doubt. The sky is excellent now, the lightening and the planet fit really well with the image. All the paint and smoke and motion blur effects work really well. Everything is good. My only quibble, and it is a very general issue, it's a bit dark and brown overall, the bottom 2/3 of the image while exciting and interesting in content are rather dark. I think it would lift the scene if some excuse was found to provide greater contrast here. It would be a rendering nightmare (well from what you said it already is) but coloured red lightsources could be scattered over the soilders to show they are being lit by the laser zaps... or something like that. Just a minor consideration really. Excellent image!

The "disadvantage" of using such an interesting sky is that it draws away the eye from where the real action is. The sky is very dramatic and does certainly fit the scene. I liked the lower two thirds of the image better on the last version but I must say, the motion blur adds a lot to the feeling of fast movement. 5/5, what else could I do?

I disagree Horo the sky never draws away from a good scene. If it does then one should reconsider the quality of things :)

Oh my gosh. The sky is beautifully well done, coming from someone who is obsessed with a good sky. The complexity of this scene is impressive, for lack of a better word. IBL helped the scene immensely, but the spider walker things on the right hand side look like they're made of plastic.

But other than that, the sky looks great, the mountains are real, the postwork fits well, and I especially like the motion blur here. The rating index doesn't go high enough to describe this one properly. Great job richter.

Thank you.
Rashad, I'm glad it payed off in your view, I happy you liked it.
Gat, well, I have no idea what caused the pic to render without shadows. I'm using Bryce 6, not the 6.1 version. It might be something already fixed in the newer vers. About Carrara - it's a tempting software with a lot of features I'd normally love to learn using, but currently all my concentration is dedicated to Maya (now I'm at the end of a proj I worked on about a month). One day I might try Carrara. There's enough time.
David, if you knew what was the pure-bryce render, you'd never said this is dark :) For you and for the rest here's a link showing the untouched render right out of Bryce. No postwork on it and it's with the same resolution as the final render. Switch between and have a look for your selves to see what's been done in postwork.
Horo, the motion blur is something I decided to use almost at the end, now it's nice to see the positive responce. Thanks!
Icecreamman, I knew the ibl would cause changes and that is why I doubted it'll work well. Some materials were changed, but apparently I missed the one you pointed out. Oh well, I have to be more careful.

Wow I like the action and lava cracks in this. I like the lighting in the first one better, though the sky is different so it makes sense. Overall the sky is really well done but the large lightning bolt on the right is a bit too bright. Lightning is a good idea over on the right as the sky is fairly featureless, but keeping it subtle and distant might look better.
