Glasses in Carrara 5 pro
Description: An attempt to duplicate the image created in Bryce using the same model. The render time was about two hour (three hours less than Bryce). Hdr lighting, DOF and soft shadows were employed along with caustics and an additional light source to create a distinct shadow. So all things being as equil as I could get them, this is a fair head to head.

Well, it's a nice render indeed. It is similar to the bryce render but the lighting angles and colors seem very different. The dof is definetly too heavy for this scene. Over-all I'd say the bryce image looks more realisitic, which surprises me greatly. The bryce render engine seems to take greater risk and provides sharper contrasts. The Carrara render engine seems safer and subdued, it does not "pop" the same way, perhaps due to the added effects like caustics and the like, most of them increase the illumination of objects in one way or another. The deep shadows of the bryce render are actually quite nice. These deep shadows seem not to happen in Carrara renders with GI.

I would say that if you could tint the lights in this scene the way they were tinted for the bryce render this scene might beat the bryce verson for realism.

Thanks. I am hopful that Horo will be easily able to convert his hdr's into a format which Carrara will accept. After all the hours of labour that he has poured into the development of light probes it would be good if they could reach as wide an audiance as possible. I don't really have much concept of how difficult it is to change the projection of the lightprobe, but considering that neither bryce or carrara have that facility on board, it must be fairly troublesome - dunno... maybe Horo will telll us?

I agree entirely with your point about the overperfectness of the lighting, it's not something I would have considered if I'd not been performing these side by side experiments - it is certainly a point to bear in mind when the aim is to create realistic images.

The multiple shadows have disappeared, the picture profits from this. It is "comforting" to see that Carrera can't handle optics correctly, either.

Looks as if I had to try to load an HDRI into my Carrera 5 Basic to see what's different to Bryce. Would be indeed nice to enlarge the user base.

First, great model, I really like all the detail at the handles. I can't tell if caustics are bad, because its almost impossible to do so. Lighting is a bit bright, and you can increase image sharpness by increasing the sabove sky light, I forget how it is called, but you will also need to increase AA quality, and if you are using photon mapping, then turn on edge thing quality something in that same box as photons.

Horo---
Blender can render Radiance HDR, is that something similar to HDRI? or is it a different file completely.

Radiance HDRI is what Bryce uses, but not to the specs but limited to compressed and only square aspect ratio (to be correctly mapped, as angular map). So I have to test that on Blender as well. Thanks to give me that hint, gat.

Hey no problem, I always wondered if it would work. Tell us if you find something.

Amazing the fine detail - love the way you've caught the depth of field much like a camera.

Thank you again, Sledge. Somethings I like about Carrara - but the interface is so offensive to me, I have never learned to love it.
