Castle Boolean
Description: This castle is %100 Bryce Primitives and Boolean operations. No lati... laticess, latices... however its spelled, or terrains. Only cubes, cylinders, and cones. Maybe one other thing I can't remember. Rendered with 1024 lights of moonbluegrey.hdr, Thanks Horo, and some color was added through sepia filters and tints. Lots of postwork in Photoshop. Otherwise the material is just the Bryce 5 default, Flat Gray.

Almost the best model made in bryce I have ever seen (or could be the best one ever), was the model of a cathedral made in Bryce, or was it imported? Does anyone remember?

I don't know, PiXi's train, bulldozer, and (was it a plane?) made in Bryce could rival it. They are phenomenal. I don't think he posts here anymore.

The model is flawless and absolutely beautiful. This needs quite some planning ahead. You did a good job in presenting it as a model, too. This earns a five out of five without further arguments. The next step would be to put materials on it and move the camera into the courtyard.

Very nice indeed! Will you be adding texture to it? How long did it take you to make the model?

I tried texturing. But stupid me, I should have textured before I started duplicating the towers. There's upwards of 400 cubes alone, maybe more and even more cylinders. I'll have to think about a courtyard though. That's a good idea. I built the model in about 4 hours. I'm considering doing an animation, although with the IBL, it could be a little lengthly in render times.

wow 4 hours, if only bryce had better modeling interface and gadgets you would be unstoppable! I think something like this out of my head would take me much longer to make using vertex modeling. I take back what i said about booleans :P

Booleans are a powerful "tool". They have their advantages and disadvantages. When I import something modeled outside of bryce, an enormous amount of Ram (depending of the complexity of the model) is used to hadle it. Those who imported poser figures and such know what I'm talking about. The more there are out there, the more memory they require. When building something in bryce out of primitives the amount of ram is in hundreds of Kbs, not hundreds of Mbs. And now that's an advantage!
Icecreamman, the castle looks very good. Before I read the description I thought it is modeled in something like hexagon or wings or blender. It's nice to see that you paid attention to those tiny details, under the windows for ex. or the upper part of the wall where the cubic hollow shapes are seen (you missed one though, the nearest to the tower on the left side of your render:)). The arch inside also has its own detailed shape. Lighting in scene is excellent and interacts very adequate with the single material. A little bit like the model was made of gypsum. I'm looking forward to see this one textured.

Thanks for your comments. I too was suprised at how quickly this model was made, but in hindsight, all I needed was a wall, a tower and the central portion. Then I duplicated. The only disadvantage to booleans are:

a. They are Bryce specific, as far as I know, exporting isn't an option.

b. They aren't very clean and sometimes very hard to deal with.

c. If you don't label your primitives using the attributes box or color them by family. Texturing afterwards is close to impossible.

But I'm very happy with the model, and yes rashad, I noticed that cube... I was waiting to see how long it would take before someone spotted that. I'll have to go and see if that can be changed. Anyway thanks for all the insightful comments, I guess I'll have to see if I can get a textured version up in awhile.

You can export booleans you jsut need to collapse them first, but this is only for Bryce6

Great work. It was richter by the way not me who noticed the cube not being cut out. For me the ibl is tinting the material just enough to make it look as mentioned like a gypsum. If you don;t have bryce 6 then get it and collpase those booleans and then texture this baby. Although once you collapse them the ram will go way up, as Richter also pointed out.

This is a bunch of converted booleans, I think if I collapse them I might destroy the scene. I'll try but I'll have to be careful.

An excellent model and made in an impressively short time. I feel certain that any attempt to collapse these will result in a crash. Horo's blue grey moon light probe is fantastic for lighting scenes such as this and the evenness of the lighting brings out subtle details without being as sterile as a standard light dome thanks to the pleasing shift in colours. Well done!

crash!

I see the concerns for a crash. The scene has been saved already I hope so there is no risk of completely losing the file even if it crashes. If Icecreamman takes his time he will likely be able to do it. Slow is the answer. Maybe in the future you (icecream) will collapse as you go to prevent the model from becoming overwhelmingly complex. Booleans can suck!
