Description: At the risk of boring you with my experimetns, here is another version of my carrara image with the modifications attepted in light of your suggestions. First of all I attended to the appearance of the tiles. Using the same model I used in bryce I organised a bit of fractal bumpmapping for them and spent a few minutes tweaking the settings until I felt they were something like. Because the tiles model (which were formerly a depth mapped preset shader on a plane) had no grout I then needed to supply that. As it was suggested the entire scene be bounded to aid the realism of the lighting, I placed everything in a box and used the sides of the box to supply the grout - which relied on some very carful object positioning - something Carrara is quite handy for with all the split screen view options. Although I do like Bryce's quick selection buttons - an option I've not yet dected in Carrara. Having organised the box I turned my attention to the fillament - modeled in wings3D and inported and given a glow - it was my origional intention to use the filliment to light the entire scene but I wasn't able to pull this off to my satisfaction. So it mearly glows a bit. As does the bulb glass. I ditched any light from the "sky" and focus on bouncing the light around inside the box and caustics. Before getting too bogged down with the technicalities of the render lighting, I made the taps a bit more shiny and spent quite a while setting the water. I engaged caustics alone and turned up the caustics till the water glowed and then darkened the colour of the water until it was more realistic and went on till I have everything balanced at 100% caustics - the effect is subtle but there - you only really notice when you turn it off. Right then, onto the main trauma. Lighting. I tried the filliment lighting everything, then filliment and bulb but I wanted the filliment to show (at least in the attenuated reflection) so I then supplied a "bulb" to put in the bulb and suplimented that with glowing filliment and glass glow. Ugly shadows appeared and I reolised that the glass and the filliment needed the shadows turning off to be any use to me. This I did and at the same time decided I needed soft shadows on the bulb lightsource - I amost needed to resort to the manual for this but luckily found that the answer lie in the bulb properties. The dimentions of the radius for the softshadows seems quite helpful and I think Bryce could gain from the use of real world dimentions instead of the arbitary bryce units. So, all told, a lot of fiddly fiddling. I coloured the light, to give it the same feel as the bryce render and ran half a dozen tests before settling on this combination of direct light, global indirect light and caustics. I can't say I'm entirely happy with the results, but it's the best I can expect from my limited understanding of the software and I know I should be happy with that.

Looks very real to me, I like it that you decided to go that far with the lighting, also the ugly shadows could have being fixed by some settings, but I don't know if that is true I only know that you can increase shadow quality. 5/5
Oh and, how does the water stay without any plug? o_0

Now this is a giant step forward. The lamp is good, never mind the missing filament. The glass of the bulb may be tarnished or matt. No problem here. The tiles look very good with the reflection and distortion. The grout in the interstices looks real. The faucets look very plausible as well and the most fantastic thing here is definitely the water. Clean and still. On the other hand, now we see that the stopper is missing and the plumbing must be clogged. I'm amazed at the speed you familiarise yourself with this "alien" program.

Thanks! I think the drains must be blocked. It's not an uncommon problem here. The filament is present but only visible in the attenuated reflection of the bulb in the tiles on the right. Carrara helps a lot in terms of providing a lot of options, but setting things up takes time, where as in Bryce I'd be occupied by filling up the 3D space with many different coloured light sources in Carrara I tick a box and slide some sliders and render and then judge and make tiny adjustments and do it all over again. Bryce is a more elemental experiance, easer (I would think) to step from Bryce to Carrara than the other way around, since most of the functions in Carrara are automations of what could otherwise be achieved in Bryce but by a long winded fashion. In consideration of the ungainly shadows, in some ways, Carrara produces too perfect a lighting, the "dirty" way of doing things in Bryce leads to some less that perfect lighting which to my eye looks more natural. I don't feel there is anything that Carrara can do that Bryce can't in terms of final image quality, however, Bryce demands more in terms of nuts and bolts understanding of the lighting situation where as Carrara required careful tuneing of rather (to me) cryptic settings. I think most people could cope with the concept of a light source, but who really knows what a "photon map" is - without reading the manual - which I've not got around to doing yet. Lazy lazy david.

Is it? It looks white on my monitor... and yellow in the refection. What am I missing? Curiously, I don't know if you've noticed, but the models imported from wings seem to come out taller and thinner in Carrara than they do in Bryce.

Amazing. Looks real indeed. I might consider the bulb to be a bit too evenly lit, the bowl of the bulb should be a touch brighter than the end. But this is just me being petty. gorgeous! real! worthy of the Carrara galleries at Daz!

What you say is true about nuts and bolts understanding. These fancy programs make the job easier, but the job was not impossible before these programs came along. Someone like you who understands lighting can make amazingly realistic images using just bryce. The artist sets the level of professioanlaism. Infact many less than professionals can appear to be professioanl because of all the help the program (Carrara) gives them. What a great tool! Best of all, it renders tons faster than the bryce versions I'm sure.

My only quibble would be the light fixture. It looks out of place and very matte. Specularity? Reflection? Something to make it pop. The water is very nice as well. You're doing a great job. 10+/5

Ok nvm it looks white again, too much reading.

Also, I have to say that indoor lighting cannot be achieved to the same level as in Carrara. And I will be proving it soon, jsut after I figure out what tha hell is wrong with Carrara importing objects, I mean really it is a pain. Also, unfortunately lwo is the only format that actually working for me, but who knows maybe it is the exporter, I will try using hex to export.

Now, one more thing is you forgetting is the none photorealistic renderer, I think it is very powerful and cool, render some particles using it.

Another thing is that leafs seem to be rendering much better with carrara, they are getting more of a sss/transp look and more detail.

And the labs are so much more powerful then Bryce's, oh my!

But, for some reason I cannot get the sky presets into my scenes, can anyone tell me why?

Gat you are right, bryce cannot produce indoor lighting as well as Carrara, nor outdoor. Global Illumination (GI) or "bouncing light" can only be faked in bryce by a careful scientific and artistic mind. There is no real substitute for GI lighting, which is why it was invented in the first place. It's the outdoor lighting I've seen from Carrara that blows my mind. It is a better program no doubt, but bryce can compete to at least to some level.

But best renderer for indoor scenes is Indigo. Or any other software like it that has the same speed.
