The Matrix Has You...
Description: Models in wings3D. Lighting. Horo's living-night1_amx9-corr-wb.hdr light probe used as a background. Seven lights inside the bulb, three lights on the right which are slightly blue. Another on the right and back which is also blue but casts no shadows - similarly on the left a brownish none shadow casting light. In the water, a "casutic" light to lighten and pattern the water. Render time 35 minutes on standard AA. Everything looks every so slightly out of true and the lighting reminded me very much of the matrix for some reason - hence the title.

Your lighting is absolutely amazing. The reflections look so real. I think here is your proof that Bryce is every bit as good as Carrarra. Great work.

Thanks! Well, I've had a go at duplicating this in Carrara 5 pro and uploaded it - bearing in mind I don't really know what I'm doing in Carrara I think it is fair to say, contemplating the two images side by side, that Carrara is certainly no mickey mouse opperation and will give Bryce a run for it's money.

I agree, this looks very real. The drop from the left faucet and the ripple on the water are a very nice detail.

Thanks. A couple of small points. The drop from the faucet, Horo (tap)... if you look closely you'll recognise the model for the light bulb. And, Rashad - no terrains, the water ripple is just a material effect, if you look at where the water meets the edge of the sink you will see it is perfectly flat (I thought someone might have picked me up on this but you've been generous) - I chose not to use a terrain, because it is never as smooth as a formula even if the resolution is pumped right up.

I agree with all that has already been said. The water in the bowl is excellent! The only thing I see is the tile is almost glass like. To me it seems too shiney. That's just to me. I have never seen tile that glossy. But you know your work is worth more that a 5. Great job.

I thought you had softened and flattened the edges of the terrain. But it's great to hear that you accomplished such depth with bumpmapping only. Which reminds me of Carrara, that is capable of bump displacement, meaning that it can really draw bumps 3 dimensionally. The warm yelloe tint of the light really forwards the realism. White lights would look sterile and false. Way to go for colored lights!

Aye, the bump dispacement I've found... and caused Carrara to seize up my computer repeatedly - much in the same way as volumentric materials cause havoc withing bryce when used in anything but the most basic lighting enviroments. Finding the most elegant solution (bumpmapping instead of terrains) is a luxury I indulge in for my own projects - when time presses the most obvious but least elegent solution should be adopted - when you are producing images for other people, you need to use your tools litterally since the modifications they will invarably request will be based on a literal interpretation of your image. Doing something like using a bumpmap instead of a terrain is fine while you controll all the parameters of the image, but if the goal-posts are suddenly moved then you can be left having to reconstruct your entire image around a different premise - at least that is what I've found.
