Humbugs
Description: Using "living-night1_amx9-corr-wb.hdr" from Horo (thank you!) just as a backdrop to provide the reflections. Lighting is provided by three radial lights, a blueish light on the left, a yellow light on the right and a white light behind the camera (only this casts a visible shadow on the "wall" (cube) at the back and I've tried to hide as much of this shadow behind the jar because of the issues Bryce has in handling shadows cast by transparent objects (no caustics). The humbugs, humbug wrappers and jar were all modeled in wings3D. The "wall" has a photo of my bathroom wallpaper on it. And the table is also a photo which has been mapped onto a terrain to give the mat a bit of depth. The render took 10 hours at 36rpp DOF effect applied to give a sense of scale and also further disguise shadow form on wall. Beware, these stripy little buggers, have a tendency to rip out fillings!

Very Sweet!

Very nice job David. You been on a sweet kick lately. You make them all look so real. I am inspired by your work. I keep working to get a little closer to your perfection. I think the way you use lighting is so far ahead of everything else I have seen. Hey wheres my pizza? lol.. just kidding!

Yeh it must have taken so long to render because of all the reflections and transperant glass jar, but I think it really paid off in the end, very real and the material choice is excellent too. 5/5 its a 10/5

That glass texture is unlike any I've ever seen before. I'm not sure if it looks so real because of the lighting or texture. Would you post the material values for that glass? I'm not sure I like the DOF yet, but I suppose it helps disguise that shadow. Great composition, I don't think I've ever seen anything like this come out of Bryce. EVER.

10+/5

Great job.

Thanks! I think the glass looks realistic because it is reflecting the light probe. The glass material itself is just the standard glass material with the refractive index turned down to 107 to simulate "thin" glass - at 153 it tends to look a bit too heavy and distorts the contents overmuch.

Thought so David, you're lighting is so much further along, I think that's one of the strong points in your work.

The glass does not look like anything much without the hdr background to refect. Otherwise there are only three lights illuminating this scene. The sweets and the crinkly cellophane around them are also slightly reflective to make up for the lack of complex lighting.

Yeah, that's photo-realism. Astonishing! The jar looks absulutely real, and you found a cunning way to evade the queer shadows Bryce tends to cast from transparent objects. I have found that using the HDRI as a specular map creates very pleasing and plausible reflections. Certainly worth a 5/5.

Well, to be fair, a lot of the image is a photo. The background is a photo, the table is a photo and most importantly, the hdr backdrop responsible for the highlights and reflections on the glass is composed of many photos. Given that more than half the images is comprised of photo it would be disappointing if it did not look a bit realistic.

Agreed. However, blending photographs into a 3D scene is not peanuts. The photographs are applied to 2D faces anyway (wall, table), so what? How I see it: as long as you can create an anaglyph by makying 2 renders with a slightly displaced camera and you get a 3D impression, it is a true 3D scene. To be honest, not all of my attempts returned a true 3D impression even though everything was made of 3D objects. It is the result that counts.

I'm curious as to where you find all these HDRIs. Horo I've scoured your website, but I've only found moonbluegrey.hdr. I have no idea where to find living-night1_amx9-corr-wb.hdr...

The wrapers were made in wings3D I started off with a cube and scaled it into a rectangle which I smoothed down into the sweet shape. This was not entirely straightforwrds since it tended to end up too round so I controlled the smoothing by insetting the sides to "brace" the shape against the smooth function. Once I'd got the sweet shape I dupiclated this to form the wrapper, enlarged it slightly, and highlighting all the nodes crumpled them to create a bit of randomness, then taking the end I extruded out the sticky out bits, which I then "screwed" up by selectively rotating so much of it at a time - which was a bit fiddly. Then I flattened the ends using scaling. The wrapper is not intruded, I figured they would be too small to require that degree of detail.

As for the deep texture editor - sorry. I don't know. The only thing to do is pick over your manual - it's all in there, even if it is in a somewhat undigestable form.

Horo's hdr's can be found by following the link he gave on his last image. I had a look and it is possible that the file name has changed somewhat. Looking under resources I noticed that he has made some available for download - but this is not one of them. Being a bit of an enthuisast about bryce, I've been helping (making use of) Horo's hdr's in a testing capacity. How many he finally chooses to distribute is entirely up to him. I consider many of his hdr's to be far superior to those supplied with Bryce6 therefore it would not be unreasonable (particularly considering how many hours is required to make a light probe and how complex the process is) for him to recieve some compensation for his hard labour. So it would not be fair to expect him to give away all his resources.

Horo has created many more hdr's than he has published. But as I said, that is his porogotive.
