Shadow Battle Group in Hyperspace
Description: Welcome to Hyperspace!

Here's a group of Shadow vessels, featuring version 2 of my heavy fighter design, travelling in my closest rendition of Hyperspace. Most of these models are Lightwave versions of the original ones used in the Babylon 5 series.

The largest ones are called Battlecrabs but who came up with this name is a mystery to me. They never used that term in the series. I always thought of them as Mother Ships. The one at top left is a scout ship. The small ones are standard fighters and are launched from the Mother Ship in a cluster that then breaks apart into the individual fighters. Then there are my new heavy fighters which now look sort of like baby Battle Crabs (Aren't they CUTE?) and seem to fit in with the rest a lot more than my original design. I need to revise them again because they still look too flat. As I get more used to modelling with Carrara I'll be able to create more elaborate designs.

The Hyperspace background actually came out very much like the one used in the series, much to my satisfaction.

They look dangerous, but they remind me of the Zergs from starcraft more then from babylon.

I've never played Starcraft. It's an interesting coincidence that these should be similar. :-)

Your hyperspace looks amazing. Just like the series! The only suggestion I would make is to give the lighting a bias of some sort, as now it feels almost too even on the models. If you could find an excuse for a light emmitting source like a ship blowing up it would add some extra light that would express the shadpe and contours and textures of these models even further. As is though it is true to the form of the series and for that you receive due respect.

Well, the Battle Crabs do not look very cute to me, fearful is more what I feel seeing these spidery things.

Rashad:

Yes, I did seem to capture Hyperspace pretty accurately and that pleases me to no end. Thank you for the compliment! :-)

I admit that lighting is still one of my weak points and I really didn't spend too much time fine tuning these scenes. I was more interested in just showcasing the models that I didn't think of applying additional illumination to enhance their appearance. I've always been a bit too hasty.

Horo:

I know what you mean. The first time I saw these on the show, which was very early in the series I might add, it definitely sent a chill up my spine. I used to have a severe aversion to spiders, arachnophobia if you prefer. Since moving to Staten Island in 1999 I've been forced to get over that problem and my general problem with insects. I don't actually 'love' spiders now but I can live with them and I sometimes find them fascinating, especially when they are constructing webs. The fact that certain species of spiders move like lightning still inspires some of that old terror I used feel about them.

On a more positive note, they do keep the more pesky insects under control so they're not all bad.

You really have captured the series here. Well done indeed. I'm hankering to watch it again now! Ship material, ship shape, design, hyperspace - spot on. 5/5
