Mass Driver: Staring Down The Barrel
Description: Here's a view looking into the business end of this prototype slug thrower. Just imagine becoming a red stain on that cast iron cannon ball you see in there when it fires. ;-)

I've added insulators where the posts exit the coil housings and narrowed the plates to increase the gap between stages. I get the impression they were too close together in the original design and would not work properly.

The optical sensors from Sentinel 1 may be a nice addition to the final version and perhaps I'll use fission bombs instead of cannon balls. We don't develop working antimatter devices until the 23rd Century so I can't use those. ;-)

Beatifully done. I expected a smoother ball. Are you sure it won't start to wobble when it hurls through barrel? Or that the whole business is torn apart by the uneven field?

You're right. I don't like the texture of the Cast Iron mat. I should have set the Bump to zero.

Ha, seeing the thumbnail I thought we were in for another kolidascopic experiment! Interesting.

I'm giving the abstracts a rest in favor of working on my modeling techniques. Looking at some of the models I've created makes me think I missed my true calling. Maybe I should have become an engineer. LOL

And now for my next project, Babylon 6.

Then again maybe not. ;-)

I think I'll stick with the small stuff for now. Maybe some alien spacecraft. I did some Vorlon looking stuff with RDS 5.5 once and I've played with some original Shadow designs in Carrara. I remember the animated Shadow Skin mat I did that worked quite well. All I need is the wave deformer they used when the ships 'phased' in and out of hyperspace and I could do an animation of it. ;-)

Place a sheet of bumpy "glass" (something like weird gradient) between you and the ship and crank up the bump (from 0) as you make the ship become increasingly transparent.

That would effect the stars around the ship as well. It may not matter for a still frame but I'm pretty sure that this particular effect cannot be done accurately in a Bryce animation.

Hmn... true... ok make a distance mask of your ship and then use that to form a lattice and place that between your ship and the camera so that the edges of the lattice just overlap the edges of the ship and then apply the glass material to it! OK, it's fiddly... sorry.

It's ok. That's a project for later. I've created a model for a Shadow Heavy Fighter with Carrara and I do say it looks pretty good. What's even better is that I've finally got that Shadow energy beam weapon down pretty darn close to the original, at least for a still frame. Animating it won't be too difficult. When I can work out a convincing simulation of it cutting another ship in half I'll be ready for a short Babylon 5 style animated action scene, sans sound effects of course. ;-)
