Orbital Electromagnetic Mass Driver
Orbital Electromagnetic Mass Driver

Orbital Electromagnetic Mass Driver
Description: Here is a neat gizmo I dreamed up. It uses a line of twenty 4 point high power electromagnets that are sequentially triggered in an exponentially accelerated sequence in order to 'throw' a 10 foot cast iron cannon ball at high speed (I estimate the speed at about 1 mile per second) towards a target in space - firing on planetary targets has been banned by the Proxima Convention. It has a circular magazine that holds 40 rounds which are magnetically loaded into the breach before firing. It can rapid fire at a rate of 1 round every 3 seconds. This is a 21st century device which relies on solar energy for operation and chemical propulsion for targeting.

This is a developmental rendering which lacks a targeting system. I'll be working on an updated model in the near future.

I commend the intuition of this idea, and the model is good. I would like to see this in space scene, maybe in a "Death Star" context, blowing up a planet, or some other outer space target.

I don't know about blowing up a planet but it would make a sizable crater. Then again I wonder what the effect of a 10 foot steel shelled cobalt bomb would be. ;-)

Thanks for the compliments!

great looking model, the solar panels look very real life like. But don't you think cannon balls is a bit primitive? even if a method for throwing them is not :P

"But don't you think cannon balls is a bit primitive?"

Well yeah. Like I said, this is a 21st century weapon. In other words it's prephaser technology. I seem to remember a similar device was planned for the Strategic Defense Initiative a few years back, aka Railgun.

I like the start of your project. Great imagination! Just don 't give the terrorists or our government any ideas ok! lol. : )

OOOPS! Too late! ;-)

Actually I don't think you need to be concerned about me giving anyone ideas. They've probably thought up things even nastier than I'd post here. ;-)

And thank you for the compliment. I've always looked at the imagination as being a truly limitless playground.

I have another project I want to develop that would be extremely practical and, like this one, well within our reach......if only the insufferably self-centered imbeciles who are controlling the world would grow up and start cooperating for a change. It's a solar collector satellite that would focus sunlight into a pseudo-laser that would be converted into electricity by a ground station. It's yet another thing I don't think will ever become a reality because it makes too much sense and would be a major step in setting us free from the damaging effects of burning fossil fuels, which would in turn eliminate the profits that the influential overgrown infants in this world are so fond of.
;-)

Such a raw cannon ball would, because of its slowness, go through 25th century shields like througg butter. It is so slow and low enery that it would penetrate any shield made for high energy laser cannons and such.

Nice idea, nicely done. The solar cells are a bit dark in this environment, hard to see whether you did them right ;-)

I don't have the equations for this but what would the weight of a 10 foot cast iron sphere be and what would the force of impact be if that sphere hits a stationary object at a speed of roughly 5000 fps?

Wait a minute....if we're talking about a zero gravity environment we'd need to know the target object's mass as well, right?

Oh never mind. I never was that good in Physics. ;-)

As for the solar cells, I probably could add a sub texture to the individual pannels to dress them up a bit more.

There are some interesting considerations here.

a) since the weapon is free floating in space, then when it fires the cannon balls, it is going to start moving - potentially quite rapidly in the opposite direction. This might be a good thing if what you are firing on is likely to fire back.

b) if the cannon balls can be maufactured in space - say after mining an asteroid, then it is a fairly cheap method of putting some heavy artillery in space.

c) not sure of the technicallities, but if this is a gaussgun type of linear accellerator weapon, then non-magnetic materials are needed for the munitions... I think... something to do with the distribution of induced magnetic domains in the material.

d) primitive? Who's to say, everything that goes around comes around... If Nasa frets over micro-metoirs punching holes through their precious equipment, cannon balls have to be taken seriously.

Regarding your point "a", have you noticed the orientation jets placed at 90 deg. angles around the main body of the device? They can be used to counter the effect of recoil. Since that recoil is gradual, not sudden like in older propellant based projectile systems, and the mass of the system is far greater than a single projectile, especially when fully loaded, not much fuel would be required to counter it.

In reference to point "b" I've mentioned that the projectiles can be manufactured in the asteroid belt and transported to the device.

Regarding point "c" this device operates on exponential acceleration which I hypothesize is capable of greater velocities than linear. I admit that my construction may have flaws but it makes sense to me, especially using a 4 point stage design over solid rings, which is more likely to keep the projectile centered within the magnet plates and thus eliminating friction.

Lastly, since this is only 21st century technology it is far from being as efficient as the high energy weapons we'll probably be producing in the 22nd century and beyond, IF our immature leaders don't completely destroy humanity before then.

Agreed. It's a race to see what will distory us first. Ourselves, an asteroid/commet, the weather, a giant volcano, a bug, the sun exploding... it's a wonder we bother to get up in a morning!

"it's a wonder we bother to get up in a morning!"

I don't. I spend most of my day sleepwalking with my brain in low gear. I almost never put it in drive and overdrive is right out. If I ever let my mind run at full speed I?d most likely go on a dalekian rampage, exterminating almost everyone in sight. The Bug in MIB put it very well.

?I do see an infestation here. Everywhere I look in fact, nothing but underdeveloped unevolved barely conscious pond scum, totally convinced of their own superiority as they scurry about in short pointless lives.?

My good friend Zaphod once used a line that I really like and would be using on most of the people around me if I wasn't in such good control of my mouth these days.

"Listen you semi-evolved simian. Can you crowbar this into your cranium?"

;-)
