Stargate
Description: If any of you seen the series on SciFi you know what this is, its a gate that uses warm holes to move people huge distance in seconds.
I used IBL for lighting as the sun made water too bright, but I am still not sure I want to go with IBL, it really doesn't like the reflective texture on the gate, oh by the way everything is made in bryce. This is still a work in progress I am not too happy with the amount of light on the pyramids as well as some other minor isues, so I would like to hear some of your opinions. thanks!

The only thing I don't like about ibl is the fact that specularity fails and volumetrics fail when ibl is used. I love the original series and as Tina said you've done great. I am not sure if I like the many bubbles floating around, it almost makes this scene feel like it's underwater, know what I mean? Anyhow, I know you have alot of tricks up your sleeve so I have no doubt you will get the result you want.

It does have an underwater look. The setup is nice and resembles a stargate (warm hole instead of worm hole - nice typo ;). Perhaps using light rings and spots instead of IBL would give you more control over the light. But you are definitely on your way.

The textures on the pillars, ground, and rocks is very good. The bubbles could use some work, and the light cast on the ground beneath the gate is a little too bright in my opinion. Also the two center bubbles have a blue tint. But I like the concept. Looks good.

thanks gwydion, you right it shouldn't be more work to do but more ideas to work with.

icecreamman-

yeah I got a problem there, I have a sphere light at the gate and a cone light up above to create additional wavy patterns from the gate. I will try and use a negative light or just deem them both down and increase range.

oh and thanks for the spelling check Horo ;) I learn something new everyday :D

I wish I had something that I could put coming out of the stargate.

I saw the film, the protagonist is Kurt Russell and the door is very similar with water to the center, likes the texture of the sand.

Since I'm in an underwatery frame of mind, perhaps I cold put in my twopennorth as far as getting the effect is concerned. Blue haze and thin black fog - blend fog and haze with sun. Use custom skyes and even if the sun isn't "turned on" the halo and the sky colour can still be used to provide a gradated backdrop to your scene. Use blue tinted radial lights. Call up an underwater scene from google images and use that as a source for colours. You can load images into the backdrop of bryce, or use a paint package to determine their RGB values - or if you have duel head, take it directly off the other monitor. The bubbles are a nice touch, but they would never get that large and stay spherical underwater - either they need to be made smaller, or make them flatter.

I was thinking of trying to do a Stargate model but that would be a major undertaking which would require my full concentration. Unfortunately life is not what I would call conducive to full concentration right now. :-( In fact it's a miracle I was able to do that Mass Driver model in one day.

I like whay you've done here. Where did you get the Stargate model or did you create it from scratch. I think the major problem with underwater scenes is the inherent blur that water creates. I think it may be possible to simulate it with DOF. I've never tried it.

The event horizon of the Stargate is something I have tried but I could never get it right. The wave pattern and illumination are very tricky. I wanted to try a variation for a wormhole vortex effect much like the one they used in the motion picture but I eventually gave up. The inclusion of industry standard deformers, like twist and explode, is perhaps something they should seriously consider in the next major Bryce version.

Those star-like points would make a good snow effect. Did you do them with UIC?

This is a great start! I look forward to a completed image.

thanks dave, just the information that i needed, I am going to try it out tonight.

spektyr that model took me about 20 minutes to make and texture, all I did was find a stargate image online, then use it as a hight map, with some cleaning it came out to look ok from far distance, then I used it for the texture too, then I took a second image with a white circle in the middle and used that for the reflection part of the stargate.
I am glad you mentioned the part about how things get blurry in the water I never thought of that.

about twist and deform you can download blender it can do all that and much more. have you tried looking online for how they did it for stargate?

I have blender but I haven't tried using it yet. To be honest, my life is full of distractions these days and it's amazing that I can sit down and toss something like that mass driver together in a few hours. And no, I haven't looked into how they did the effects. I'll check into that and a few other effects I'd like to master one of these days.

Oh, by the way, I just thought I'd mention that you have the Stargate upsidedown. ;-P
