Volumetric Slab Clouds
Volumetric Slab Clouds

Volumetric Slab Clouds
Description: Here's an example of some of the photorealistic clouds you can make with volume slabs. I found a tutorial for making them, and I've posted it on the forums in the Bryce 5 and Ideas category. The technique uses massive volumetric slabs positioned way way up, like 10,000-60,000 Bryce units high. The secret is in 3 textures in the material, and the way the components are manipulated. The technique is very complex, but the tutorial does a fairly good job of explaining. For anyone who is willing to sit down and play around with it for awhile, thousands of new cloud possibilities open up. I highly recomment that you check out this tutorial. It's worth it.

Your clouds are perfect. They look so real. How did you get them to look flat and darker on the bottoms of the clouds? I am really interested seeing as though I need a lot of improvement on my skies. Thanks for any tips you can give.

Yes the clouds look very good shapes, their surfaces look a little "grainy" - but my greatest concern would be how long they took to render?

David, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, these clouds alone took about 2-3 hours to render on Regular AA. *winces* The graininess is mainly from the AA, at least that would be my guess. Tina, I posted a link to the tutorial in the forum under the Bryce 5 and Ideas section, check it out!

Hmn... my guess would be that the grainyness is most likely caused by the quality of the volumetric material - needs more hair and less tortoice - but then the time cost is well... distressing. Anyhow, thanks for letting us know!

Wow, great clouds. It's nice to know that bryce can do such things. Thanks for the link. I have developed a few volumetric tricks of my own over the years and it is never simple to make them look good. In this case i think the results are excellent and the render seems reasonable.
