Deep Blue
Deep Blue

Deep Blue
Description: An underwatery scene. Terrains for the walls, boolians for the fish and a bumpy infinite plane for the water surface. Lit with a artifical sun and a dozen or so weaker lights to provide some "ambience" closer to the surface. Fog, haze and even evil evil ambient have been employed to give the illusion of increasing depth. DOF for the final render. Oh and hours spent exploring the blue pallette.

wow dave first impression is its so realistic, texture and rocj formation and the LIGHTING! is so real. good use of dof as well, but I wish those fish were imported, the booleans are giving them out. I got to try to make this under water scenes, I don't think I ever made one.
4.5/5 (the fish)

amazing

Very good lighting. The terrains on their sides looks very good. The dof adds alot to the sense of being underwater. Very impressive and I cannot think of an improvement other than some more variation in the fish. Excellent!!!!!!

That one really rocks! Absolutely fantastic. Terrains, light, angle of view, colour, sense of scale. Beautiful. Just the fish could have done with a bit of colour. Nice job doing them with primitives. 5/5, no doubt.

Unbelievable image. Your composition is flawless, I would move the school of fish to the top and the few fish down towards the bottom, this would be more realistic. Great DOF on this too. Also as Gat said, your lighting work is amazing. 5/5 on this one.

one thing I can also think off, is using texture on lights, to create that light scatter affect from the wat, that would be a big plus.

Thanks... yes you are right about the fish. I need to model those up and maybe add some colour there. As for texture on the lights, that is something I did try. However the idea was defeated by the ruggedness of the walls of the trench. The pattern was just lost. I would like to try that on a sea bed image. But I'm still tinkering with this one at the moment. Tryng to find some ways of shoehorning in some colour and such.

The fish don't bother me so much as that they look very dry. Never having been diving I can't really say what things look like down there, but up close here things looks like they're out in the air. Maybe some of Frozencry's light rays would help? And of course the light patterns. That said, it's still an easy 5.

Thanks for the hint on the dry fish. That's well spotted. I also gave the light rays a trial, but they are getting too stigmatised for my tastes. I was wandering maybe some air bubbles myself. If I could think of some reason for them.

Brilliant!

The colors and the lighting are excellant! LitoNico is right about the fish. That was the second thing I noticed. They almost remind me of a mobile. But the scene is just so calm and awe-inspiring! 5/5

corals dave corals :)
it be a big pain in the a** to place them but, I have some suggestions on how to do that:

a) you can do it by hand, by using the shaded mode (which works great by the way).

b) you can turn the terrain on it's side and then drop them on to it.

hope that helps with the color issue, but to me there is non.

a). I did a bit of that last night. I made a small filter feeding thingy - don't ask me, I'm not a marine biologist - it was just something like I saw in Pirates of the Caribean 3 coming out of some undead sailers face... and I thought... that looks colourful - I'll make one of those. (filter feeder not the undead - I don't generally practice necromancy on a saturady night)

b). Now b is a very interesting idea indeed. I like the way you are thinking there... but more in terms of maybe droping a load of rocks onto the terrain to make a super crinkly surface with nooks and crannies in it in a way no terrain would normally turn out. Yes, I think I will have to experiment with that. Thanks!

c) colour... well, I don't know, I may be wrong, but I think it might raise the bar slightly. As I explained I tried "caustic" light and "streaming" light. I don't want to alter the composition (don't ask how long it took to figure that out). So I'm left pondering colour. The blues took some finding. But it is maybe a bit overly blue now?

I would think that too if you were to add color.

Looks like you're getting the underwater look down pat, David. This is really nice. The haze and DOF effect make this one look very convincing.

5/5
