Discover
Description: Inspired by the discovery tv, this is a place where Earth ends, and the ice is over a mile deep, and a mountain is just a hill on the surface.

IBL + Sun, 2 volume clouds, 3 terrains, fog, haze, sun rings, dof.

The focus is supposed to be on the mountain to the far right. I placed cloud material on to a torus. Now that I think about it I should have used a metaball instead that way I could have gotten rid of the sharp geometry.

Enjoy :)

I think you made a good job here. I like the terrain, the sky and the fog. The only thing that really puts me off is the size of the sun. If the Earth ends here miles deep in ice, I would expect a less powerful sun, if it must be huge, then it ought to be red. It could also be a white hot dwarf but it had to be very far off to make Earth a refrigerator. If the sun were smaller or invisible, I would like this picture much more. I have not seen discovery tv so it is just as possible that you are spot on.The ring of the sun at left looks really good.

Your depth of field is a little too blurry. Also you might be able to give that sun a corona with a postwork program. I know you added a halo, but it is a little too big. It reminds me of far off falling rain streaking down from the clouds. You've done a very nice job on the sky especially.

hmm

I like the impression of depth. I miss the colors though. I feel the image is a black and white picture, like it had color in real life but the camera could not capture it. The lighting is very good over-all.

Ibl and volumetics don't get along very well, something to do with the shading method and the ibl light sphere. Volumetrics become flat, alot like skylab clouds.

I am curious about the appearance of multiple bodies floating in the sky. One up in the sky and the other at the horizon. Can you explain these things to me?

The dof thas a very cool effect on the snow, though I wonder what your AA settings were because the snow should never become grainy if realism is the goal, which I'm not sure it was..I'm just pontificating. As always from you, very cool work!

Thanks guys, well here is more in depth explanation of the scene, which might explain some of the things that I did and way I did them.

This is supposed to be south pole, so the atmosphere is thin and there won't be much color in the sun or the sky, and even less if everything is sort off monotone. The limited amount of objects is due to the fact that there is only rock and snow there, and ice is over a mile deep and covers all of the mountains. Those two objects supposed to be low clouds, unfortunately they got washed out by the sun and ibl. But, I got the best sky blend for them I couldn't have gotten without IBL, so there is a two edge sword here. DOF is that strong to show that other mountains are extremely far away, and the land is empty, lonely and uninhabitable.
AA settings were too low, but you know me I don't like to wait long :(.
