Twisted shrine a further offering
Description: We are now underground. Horo's moon hdr has been abandoned and the scene is lit by multiple coloured lights, the most obvious of which is the central glowing sphere. The ground has been replaced by water and some of the lattices have been stolen from the "quadrillogy" image and retextured with a more rugged material. Here the bump surroundings contrast sharply with the smooth alter stones. Clearly mirrors have been employed to extend the cave system and add additional shrines and lights in the background.

You get a thumbs up and a 5/5 on this one David. The colors go with your theme much better. I love that you made it look even eerier. This is a true sign of artistry. When I look at something it either grabs me or it does'nt. Your 1st image grabbed me and this one pulls me into it. Great job!

Don't like this one as much. The background and the water is too grainy, and the cave background doesn't look natural. Also the colored lights are a poor replacement for the HDR. I really liked the orbs too. The second image you posted was the best in my opinion.

What are the settings you used in your ivy grower for this scene?

I have to agree with icecreamman I liked the other ones better, this is just going back to the old stuff, plus it doesn't really fit into this scene.

I agree more so with Tina, in that the scene is more complete. I understand why you abandoned the hdr and to me the choice is just fine. I think we may at times become spoiled by soft shadows and the like, but not every scene can be lit as an ibl. In an underground scene like this, hdr lighting is simply out of the question. Perhaps soft shadows could have been employed but I know from personal experience that more than one soft shadow lightsource in a single scene can take a bit of a while to render. I think the soft shadows would satisfy most viewers.

The colored lights do a very good job of setting the "mood." Which happens to be very eerie. I really like the textures as they look rough. The water has a feeling of movement. For me this is a very good scene.

As for the image, curiously I like this one best. The debate of soft and hard shadows is one which can run and run. I chose hard shadows here because I already had complex geometries and bumpy surfaces, if the scene had been very sparce in this respect I'd have selected soft because it's impact would have been more significant. Mostly I'm pleased with the green light, since it's sometimes difficult to get away with using a green light amid a predominantly red environment I've been lucky to get away with it.

I completely agree with tina. This is a very nice setup. I don't particularly like the water, but the cave and the light are excellent. For me, it's well worth a five/fiver.

"A shadow shall fall over the Universe
And evil will grow in its path
And death will come from the sky."

That really comes close to the Loc Nar. I've been playing with that one for a long time and haven't gotten there yet.

Oh. Just in case anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, get a copy of the animated movie Heavy Metal. The above quote is from the begining of that movie and the Loc Nar....well, just watch the movie and you'll find out about that.

Excellent detail, David. An awesome image.

5/5
