Winter Segment of the Contest Entry
Description: As my "contribution" to the Nebraska State Fair, I am entering an image in the graphic design contest. The theme is "Nebraska Seasons." This same scene will be textured and rendered in all four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I started with winter because I thought it would be the easiest. I'm going to take all of the season renders in PS and divide them into 4ths, each fourth being one season. So the same scene will progress left to right through the seasons by fourths. This is the first draft of the winter section. I realize the brush on the left side of the image is a little too sparse, but realize that the winter part you will see is only the fourth on the far right. I hope I haven't confused anybody too much... The grass\weeds\plants are from 3dplants.com. Trees, terrains, and textures all done by yours truly. Three and a half hour render at Premium AntiAliasing with Soft Shadows. Whew!

Nice image, I like the snow and grass, it looks very real. But I think you should add more trees to hide the fact that they look so geometric, also bump up gravity too if those are bryce trees. I would add some more detail until you max out your RAM.

I like the snow effect. I did one years ago. You can see it here.

I posted it when I was using the name PhoenixRising - an alternative name I created because I screwed up with my original spektyr account - and it took close to 24 hours to render if I remember correctly. It was the trees that drove the render time through the roof. Being one of my first imaged done with Bryce3D it looks more like an oil painting than a 3D scene but I'm still proud of it. :-)

It's not hard to see that the weeds are clones. that's one of the drawbacks to using a single object to simulate many. Same with the grass only I didn't notice it until I saw the weeds. I guess to the untrained eye it wouldn't be so obvious.

The scene itself inspires a profound feeling of tranquility for me. It brings back times when I used to meditate on beautiful scenery and winter has always been my favorite season for that. Snow falling lazily onto pristine white fields.....heavenly! :-)

I agree with gat about adjusting the trees and adding a little more detail, but not too much. I'd keep the scene uncluttered.

Thanks for the feedback, yes I realize the image is a little less detailed. RAM's pretty much already maxed out. Each grass model is about 29,000 polys, and the weeds are about 60,000. I have a pretty fast machine, about 1 GB of RAM, I think. The scene itself takes about ten minutes just to open and save. If you have any ideas on how to simplify those models, let me know.

The scene is very pleasing and has a suitably wintry feel to it - if maybe a little bright - although I don't know, winters in Nebraska are probably brighter than here in the grey dank UK? The snow looks a little like noise, snow is troublesome to do in bryce, I recommend splitting the snow away and dealing with it separately if you are prepaired to use postwork. Render the snow against an all black scene. Add motion blur to the snow in post. Then layer the snow back over your scene. Otherwise it tends to look more like white noise than snow. I agree with Gat about the shape of the trees, but don't feel the scene needs any more adding to it, just changing their shape a bit would I think improve matters. Good work.

Agreed that the winter feel is in effect. Agreed that the trees would benefit from a higher gravity setting. I would caution to be careful with the imported models, as in 6.1 they can kill a scene as they have to a few of my favorites.

Gat is right about the scene needing a touch more complication. The issue is that the foreground is populated but the background is completely sparse. If you were to fill in the horizon just a little bit (not too much because it would ruin the effect) it would look more natural and less like an artist hasn't yet gotten around to the background. Generally, this scene is really good and I look forward to your new works. Four seasons!
