What does it all mean?
Description: As a break from making micro adjustments to my Huntcliff images, which everyone must be pretty fed up of seing by now. I know I've reached a stage of exhaustion with them... I've generated just under 100 files in conjunction with those three images - which maybe give some insight into what I mean my micro adjustment. Anyway, this is a break from that, a fun piece, which I will not interpret for you but leave you to draw what conclusions you will. Lit once again with Horo's excellent moon_bluegrey.hdr and featuring a little character wizzed up in wings3D. Doubtless you can detect the use of mirrors... I'll say no more.

One of the things I like most about ibl is the effect it has on bump mapping and textures. The textures look very "real." It looks like a photograph of some toys in a claymation movie. In this case you get away with alot as far as the mirror is concerned. You have no haze to give away the mirror, nor any visible sky. The hdri provides terrific even lighting. The mirror is made obvious only through the slight darkness of the backsides of the forefront models being reflected. I would not have suspected a mirror at first, I would have assumed that the darker ones were just made of a darker colored material.

The one that seems to be being born or dying into or out of the mud, gives this scene a touch of eerie for me. Though the fun remains. Fun done so well.

Well I'll be! It's a whole species of chubby chess pawns! I always wondered why they made chess pawns look like that. I guess now I know.

I used you used replication tool until I read your comment. Interesting image, the way bump, light, and mirror all interact.

Yeah, IBL is a pleasure to use on still life, it really brings to the models an uncanny level of plausibility and works well with the bumpmapping. I also used the replication tool. There are 200+ of these little fellows. That is enough to use all my computers RAM - at that point I put in the mirrors rather than go through the grind of wating for the computer find a way of simulating more RAM with the aid of the HD - that really slows things down!

Cute. Since all of those fellows appear to have black eyes they seem to be alive while the one lying in the mud has the inside of its head lit and it is empty. I conclude that it must be dead and the others are all paleontologists who found it. Yes, the light is excellent and the mirror cunningly hidden.

These chess pawns apear to be a very hearty breed. Pawns are usually slender in the middle, being they fight for the monarchy and have to be in tip top shape, but these are a chubby lot. The one in the mud was clearly suffering from extreme obesity and probably died of congestive heart failure. The tall one there must be lecturing the little ones on the evils of laziness and over eating. He's probably telling them that if they don't straighten up and get thier act together they'll end up like this unfortunate worm food here.

Hey gat

Of course the eyes are holes, that's why I said 'appear to have'. It's only the white one near the muddy one where we can see right through the head to the floor. Considering the number of the others, it can be ignored from a statistical point of view.

What does it mean?

It's really nicely done. Very creative. Are those bowling pins? They look like a cross between aliens & bowling pins. It put a big smile on my face! Thanx!
