The Needle
Description: This was planned as a simple thing just to tell Thanks to gat, but it fooled me quite a bit. The Golden Gate bridge came from Google SketchUp and was imported into Bryce with a little help from Blender. It was ungrouped and the metal parts got two different rusty materials (Pitted rusting iron Mk.III and Rosting metal), both from David. The landscape also got a material from David (High Altitude Mountain Lake). The Grumman Goose is from LitoNico, the sky a thoroughly modified preset with sun halo rings engaged. The water is my modified Calm Water. The scene is lit by the sun and my Blue-Grey-Moon HDRI for ambiance and that's what fooled me a while because I initially used another HDRI with a bright sun in it and I got double shadows. Rendered with soft shadows in 8 hours.

Compositionally this is an excellent piece and the lighting is very interesting too - the sky suffers from being "flat" - particualrly on the left, but that's not something that is easy to overcome - as we have discussed on many occasions. The choice of materials is good - well, I can't say otherwise can I? I would suggest turning the frequency up on the terrain - maybe, or adding a higher frequency component to help with the scale. The solution you came up with for the shore issue on the right fits very well in this scene. Got to give top marks for that 5/5. I've still got issues with the water... looks a bit like it is contaminated because of the speculative sheen? Also, I think it could tollerate even higher wave frequency - maybe. I don't know it's again a scale thing. At a glance the image looks spot on, but when studied the scene begins to take on the appearence of a model. Use of the IBL here is spot on and the soft shadows really work well on the wires of the bridge. On the whole... I'll go maybe for 4/5 - I think that this image would stand further experimentation. I'd be tempted to try shifting the sun a little further to the right and possibly boosting it so that it clips further along the far bank and across the bump of the terrain. Maybe.

Ok. That looks like the Golden Gate Bridge but where did San Franscisco go? Isn't Alcatraz supposed to be out there somewhere too? Oh. Wait. At this angle you wouldn't see The Rock, would you?

All kidding aside, This is a beautiful image, Horo. I love the modeling on the bridge. I don't know if I could have pulled that one off at my present level of experience. Later, when I get much better, I would add more details like a divider down the center of the deck, lane divider lines, a few vehicles and walkway rails, but all that is beyond me right now. A few seagulls perched up top and on the cables would be a nice touch. That needle peak looks wicked.

Botton line for me is that it's an awesome image.

5/5

Awesome. Very good! This is a terrific study in lighting situations where there is no strong direct sun. The only problem I have other than the clouds which are not fixable, is the sceleing of the water waves. right now most of the waves are wisder than the bridge itself. I think that if you increase the frequency of the waves they will get shorter in length and look better. The depth of the bump for the waves seems perfect. 5/5!
Also Ibl can do great things but one issue I have is matching lighting angles. As David mentioned it seems spot on for the first minute but then starts to look like a man made image due to the shadows on the water from the bridge not matching the angle of the indicated sun.

I am glad it worked for you, hopefully the exporter will be updated and then you would be able to import textures as well.
About the image I agree just about on everything with Dave. I think that the bridge could really use some cars on it, and the sky could be replaced by an image.

Thanks to all of you! Rashad came up with the hint I was missing about the water, the ratio wave size/bridge is what I didn't see. I looked at each separately. The shadows - well, at least they are not anymore on the other side towards the sun, which is an improvement. I'm not going to redo this one but I will keep your comments in mind next time I mix sunlight with IBL.

Very beautiful!

I wrote a comment earlier but its not here now so I'll rewrite it. This is a very lovely scene. It's soothing. It reminds me of being in San Francisco looking over the bay. Have you ever been? Is this the Golden-gate Bridge? This looks soooo real I can actually smell the ocean air. Ha! Keep bringing us your masterful pieces.
