Washed up
Description: Beach probe hdr provides the light, and to some extent the backdrop. Between the camera and the horizon a transparent image of the sky taken with a digital camera has been inserted and behind that a mirror placed to reflect part of the beach probe hdr image through it (the backdrop and the lighting not being suitable for this image when they are aligned). The sand is a varient of the sand used in the underwater image with the octapus and is freely available on my website. The sea is the same as the material used in the great big waterfall, available here in the materials exchange, the only modifcation made was to reduce the diffuse channel response since the hdr light had to be set quite high to work with the cloud picture. The bottle is a model left over from Bryce4. Mostly everthing else in this image is terrains. Final processing involved edge enhancement and desaturation of the colours to work in black and white.

Cool Monochomatica!

I do have to be honest. The sky, hills and bottle look good but the sand and water......the Voronoi Dist. bump doesn't work for me on the sand. Sand wouldn't have practically any bumpiness on a shoreline. Then again I guess it wouldn't be so easy to simulate wet sand. I haven't been able to get it quite right myself. And the water...it doesn't look wet. It looks more like ice. The terain work there is very good, the way you simulated the surf and foam. I've always wanted to try simulating the Bonzai Pipeline with maybe a surfer riding the 'tube'. LOL

I've always liked black and white especially on film. The details tend to look razor sharp compared to color. And B&W film is a cinch to process too. ;-)

I love the clouds! That's the HDR, isn't it? They sure do look photorealistic.

The send gives it away, and the number of waves, maybe DOF would fix the wave issue. Other then that the water is really realy good, the texture on it is 5/5.

I wonder what this would look like if you only turned the sky image black and white, and the rest just changed the materials inside of bryce and render it into a black and white image.

In general this scene was much more challenging than it appears. I think the clouds and sky itself is very good. I have really never seen a real sky worked into a bryce scene so well. You did a very good job of setting up the lighting angles to match the lighting of the sky and clouds.

The water and waves and foam are hard to make look like themselves in a black and white world. It's not your fault. I was actually looking at a black and white movie late the other night and the water looked really weird, almost "fake" I think I would avoid diffussion on the water mat and provide a real water mat with the foam layered on top of it as a separate but duplicate terrain. Adding diffussion to the water mat makes it turn solid and icy looking in my short sighted view.

The bump on the sand is perhaps a bit too deep, more shallow and less sharp peakes. Great work.

Monochrome is always also a means of expression. We tend to overlook this option too often. Though I think there were other reasons for you to "resort" to monochrome, it is a very good choice.

In fact using a photograph as sky is more challenging than it appears at first glance. But if you can make it work - and you certainly did it here - then it is a workaround for the notoriously flat Bryce skies.

Water and foam are excellent. I hear the waves rolling in. The sand material is exquisite, but does indeed not fit here, I agree with the other peers. Perhaps your wet sand material would have been a better choice here.

Nevertheless, this reminds me of the picture postcards I've seen as kid. Monochrome and high contrast. If it weren't for the sand, a 5/5.

Thanks, yes, making a virtue out of necessity, my graphics card has gone a bit doolally and can't be trusted to deal honestly in colour, greens turn out purple - that kind of thing. Never mind. Black and white will make an interesting diversion, till I can organise a replacement.

I think I shall have another go at this subject, I'd like to see if I can achieve some decent wave shapes with the aid of B6's new [c] feature perhaps?

I did try the wet sand, but it didn't like the hdr - I will maybe try something else with the lighting next time around and see how that goes. This will let me keep the wet sand maybe.

The clouds are not part of the hdr, they are just a photograph I've imported (hence their photoreality is reality), the hdr background is behind them.

[c]

The [c] function allows geometries to be combined and converted into single mesh objects (which could then be exported if required). This is a handy feature if you intend to model things in bryce - however, mostly I favour wings3D for modeling.

oh yep thats right I forgot about that.

I don't model in bryce anymore, I learned how to use blender and I am learning google's cketchUp.

By the way, how many upgrades are there for wings3D? The reason I am asking is because I tried this program twice so far and there wasn't much done to it.
