Plaque
Description: The picture name written in Wings3D using the Tengwar Quenya font and one single sphere make up the scene. Not even a ground plane. Lit exclusively by the reflection of Tunnels2 HDRI (HDRI-Effect=0). Renders in less than 2 minutes.

Rendered 8 times with different intensity setting and assembled an HDRI with them (dynamic ca. 110'000), then tone-mapped it down, using the Fattal algorithm. This is a local tonemapper that produces artefacts depending on the Radius, Micro and Softlight settings. Here, the background was created by the tone-mapper.

It appears as if this background pattern was reflected in the plaque, but this is not the case, this, too, is an artefact created by the tone-mapper.

And interesting and highly technical piece of work. For myself, as a piece of art, I don't find it very appealing, but on the other hand, if this were a graphic to be provided as part of a web page, then it would look top notch no doubt.

This is rather an experiment than a piece of art. The subject at hand offered itself to try out what I've had on my mind for quite a while: create an HDRI from a scene (not yet another light probe) and tone-map it down. The thought appeared to me after I made the plaque for http://help.horo.ch but I think I must also experiment with a traditional Bryce scene and see what can be accomplished.

Thank you Rashad. I really like it very much, too. It is artwork but not a work of art.
