Ship Running From Shockwave
Description: This is one of my fist pictures I have made on Bryce 5.5. I wanted it to be a ship running from a shockwave in space. I did not put a texture on the ship becasue I do not know how to make my own. Could someone pleae tell me where I can find out how to make my own texutre.

Depending on how your model is made then there are a variety of ways you can apply a texture. The simplest approach would be to pick a suitable material out of the bryce presets and modify it in the material lab, or if you are feeling really brave, use the deep texture editor. Alternatively if you have access to a scanner or digital camera, you can use images taken from those and import (or even something you've found off the web). Furthermore, there is also uv mapping, but that is something I would not recommend for starters.

However, in this scene it is not the lack of texture that is an issue but the lighting. I would suggest for a space scene, no ambience, (that channel could be used for supanova illumination alone and cutting out ambient response in all other materials). A sky with some stars in it might help matters also, but that is a minor detail. What I would try, is a strong single light source in place of the sun on the far right of the scene (leaving the left of the ship in deep shadow) and maybe a weaker blue purple coloured light source inside the nova (releaving the deep shadow somewhat).

David is right. Before labouring about textures on the spaceship, improve lighting. This setup has a lot of potential, well worth to keep working on it.

Ditto ditto. The advice you've received could not be better. I really like the way this piece is shaping up, so keep at it. As David said, the only thing that will need ambient in a scene like this is the glowing hot gas because it is thousands of degrees, and the background stars if you choose to use a photograph. The ship itself will not need ambient on it's materials except perhaps for the thrust plasma. I perhaps differ with David in that I think the strongest light source in this scene would be from whatever is causing that shockwave. The explosion is not nearly as powerful as the sun, but we are so close to it that it might seem brighter than the sun. You will have to test it out to know which looks more plausible as the primary light. Truthfully, in my mind I would consider both to be primary since they are both going to be somewhat bright. Nice start!
